Fans say a gruesomely ‘terrifying’ new horror series with a star-studded cast is ‘pure nightmare fuel.’
Horror films and TV shows are designed to stir feelings of terror, dread, and exhilaration and the series in question is no exception.
The drama follows a detective who suspects a series of disturbing crimes in her small community are personal.
The release has left some traumatized, with one viewer writing: “I am currently watching it, I’ve been on the edge of my seat the whole time, but I can’t look away.”
Another adds: “This show is so messed up and dark, I had to look away at some parts, it goes places I don’t want to go, my stomach turned.”
“This show is a cycle of hell,” a third simply puts it.
Somebody else writes: “The show is a mind f***. Disturbing and hard not to binge-watch!”
Referring to one particular scene, a fifth says it’s ‘pure nightmare fuel.’
The horror series is also receiving praise from critics, with The Guardian‘s Rebecca Nicholson describing it as ‘chilling.’
She wrote: “Eerily beautiful, in its gothic gloom. Onlookers are often paralyzed by the gruesomely staged crime scenes, struck dumb with horror.”
Alci Rengifo said for Entertainment Voice: “It is a stylish, smart procedural with a strong cast that makes its terrors grounded and relatable.”
While Bl**dy Disgusting‘s Daniel Kurland said the show ‘begins with a brave, bold vision that signals a promising serial killer thriller.’
The series has also scored 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.2/10 on IMDb.
The FX horror series was created by Ryan Murphy, known for hit shows such as American Horror Story and Monsters, alongside co-creators Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken.
It also has a star-studded cast, including Scream Queen’s Niecy Nash, American Crime Story‘s Courtney B. Vance, Monster‘s Nicholas Alexander Chavez, broadway singer Micaela Diamond, Raven Goodwin from Single Black Female, Lesley Manville from Phantom Thread, and NFL star Travis Kelce in his scripted on-screen debut.
Grotesquerie‘s synopsis reads: “A detective and a nun investigate a series of heinous crimes that seem personal while grappling with personal issues and uncovering a sinister web that raises more questions than answers.”
Having ended on a cliffhanger, the series is perfectly set up for a season second that could provide a much-needed explanation.
Although a follow-up has yet to be confirmed, lead actress Nash recently told The Wrap: “We talked about a second season before we ever filmed the first page of dialogue.
“Ryan always has a plan. I’m privy to doing things, but you don’t want to give any spoilers.”
FX boss John Landgraf also teased a second season when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter: “We’re definitely considering doing more because, as you’ll see at the end, it’s like a series of Russian nesting dolls. You just saw the doll within the doll.”
