Special Agent Michael McPherson said: “Earlier today, investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items such as a backpack and notebook belonging to Brian Laundrie.

“Our evidence response team is on scene using all available forensic resources to process the area. It’s likely the team will be on scene for several days.

“I know you have a lot of questions, but we don’t have all the answers yet. We are working diligently to get those answers for you.”

It comes after Petito’s body was found on September 19 at Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park following a mass search that made headlines across the globe.

An autopsy later confirmed she died from strangulation.

Teton County Coroner Dr Brent Blue revealed the horrific findings during a news briefing.

He said: “We hereby find the cause and manner of death to be, the cause, death by strangulation, and manner is homicide.

“By Wyoming state statute, no other information will be released about the autopsy.”

Following the announcement, Laundrie’s family lawyer, Anthony Bertolino, released a statement expressing sympathy for the Petito family. However, the 22-year-old’s bereaved mother slammed it as ‘garbage’.

According to Daily Mail, Nicole Schmidt sent a text message to a reporter moments later which read: “His words are garbage. Keep talking.”
