Idris Elba has decided to give fans an update on whether or not a Luther movie is actually happening – and it’s good news. The actor has confirmed that the popular crime show will have a movie and that it’s already in the works, as of July.
After receiving the Special Award at the Bafta TV Awards, reporters asked Idris Elba whether or not a Luther movie would be happening.
In response, the actor said: “I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards – a film.
“And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.”
He added: “With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”
Having been a huge success for the BBC, Luther ran for five series between 2010 and 2019.
Although there were never any “formal plans” for another series, the 47-year-old has confirmed that there have been discussions about turning the show into a blockbuster motion picture.
He told Sky News: “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film.
“And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.”
In the Q&A, Idris also revealed that he would like to spend more time directing and being behind the camera. Alongside his acting career, he is eager to pursue writing.
The actor noted that through his production company, he has been given the opportunity to produce content “solidly for about five years”.
He explained: “I love it, it is a really slow burn thing, and you cultivate your land really slowly, but it is really satisfying.”
