Swedish furniture company IKEA has decided to share its iconic meatball recipe so that people stuck at home during the coronavirus lockdown aren’t missing out.
Whilst people have stayed inside their homes to help the NHS and to save lives during the coronavirus pandemic, many have taken up new skills and hobbies to pass the time.
For a while, baking banana bread was all the rage but that might be about to change now that big names such as IKEA are releasing their famous recipes.
In recent weeks, McDonald’s has revealed how to make the perfect Sausage and Egg McMuffin that are many are missing so much.
However, if this isn’t what your stomach is yearning for, then maybe it’s a dish of IKEA’s iconic meatballs.
Swedish retail giant IKEA has released instructions on how they make the meatballs that are served in their restaurants and it turns out it’s a pretty simple six-step method which certainly looks easier than putting together some of their flat-pack furniture!
IKEA’s Country Food Manager Lorena Lourido said when in a discussion of the recipe: “We know that some people might be missing our meatballs, which is why we’ve released an at-home alternative which, using easily accessible ingredients, will help those looking for some inspiration in the kitchen.
“Staying at home can be hard, but we want to help make everyone’s lives that little bit easier and more enjoyable. Bon appétit or, smaklig måltid, as we say in Sweden!”
The ingredient list includes:
- 500g beef mince
- 250g pork mince
- One onion finely chopped
- One clove of garlic, chopped or minced
- 100g breadcrumbs
- One egg
- Five tablespoons of whole milk
- Generous amount of salt and pepper
If you want to make the cream sauce alongside the meatballs, then you will also need a dash of oil, 40g of butter, 40g of plain flour, 150ml of vegetable stock, 150ml of beef stock, 150ml of thick double cream, two teaspoons of soy sauce and one teaspoon of dijon mustard.
First of all, to prepare the meatballs you will need to combine beef and pork mince and mix it with fingers, making sure to break up any lumps. Then, add the finely chopped onion, garlic, bread crumbs and eggs, make sure to mix them thoroughly together. Following this, add in the milk and season it well with some salt and pepper.
You then need to shape the mixture into small, round balls. Place them all on a clean plate and then store in the fridge for around two hours (this helps them to shape before being cooked).
Once the two hours are up, take them out of the fridge and get a frying pan. Heat oil on a medium heat level and when it’s hot, you can gently add the meatballs.
When they are brown, add them to an oven-proof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven (180 conventional, 160 fan) and then cook them for a further 30 minutes.
If you’re making the sauce, you will need to melt butter in a pan and then whisk in plain flour and stir for two minutes. Add the veg and beef stock and continue to stir. Then, you’ll need to add cream, soy sauce and mustard. Make sure to bring it to a simmer and allow it to thicken up.
Now your meatballs and sauce should be ready to eat, enjoy!
