Jeff Bezos

Earlier this year, Jeff Bezos pledged that he’d be donating $10 billion between 16 different environmental groups.

The Amazon founder says he wants to help fund the fight against climate change, which he dubs an ‘existential threat’. So on Monday, he confirmed the initial grants would total $791 million.

The recipients of the donation will include groups that are dealing with global warming, including ClimateWorks Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, who will receive a donation, say they will use their $15 million of the grant to advocate for updates to the U.S. electrical grid and electrify commercial trucking.

After deciding which groups will receive the grants, Bezos took to social media to confirm the exciting news.

On Instagram, he wrote: “I’ve spent the past several months learning from a group of incredibly smart people who’ve made it their life’s work to fight climate change and its impact on communities around the world. I’m inspired by what they’re doing, and excited to help them scale.”

The post has since been liked over 180,000 times and the move has sparked praise from many.

One commented: “Jeff that’s amazing and I’m glad you’re giving back.”

Another added: “How kind-hearted and generous.”

In a separate pledge, Amazon says it will also donate $2 billion to climate-related clauses.

The first round of grants will fund startup companies working on new technology aiming to decarbonise the economy.
