Jeremy Clarkson has finally managed to open his Diddly Squat Restaurant through a ‘loophole’.

The Grand Tour host had originally hoped to open an eatery at the site of an old lambing barn on his farm, which gained recognition through his Amazon Prime series Clarkson’s Farm.

However, the local council rejected his application after 53 Chadington residents put forward complaints and concerns about an increase in traffic throughout the village.

Speaking to The Sun, the 62-year-old revealed: “Everyone at Diddly Squat has spent the last three months becoming an expert in planning regulations and we’ve found a delightful little loophole.

“We’re going to sell all the stuff we produce on the farm and finally make some profit from the stuff we grow rather than run up losses.”

On the booking website OpenTable, Clarkson posted: “Before making your booking, you should know it’s small, mostly outdoors and very rustic.

“We’ve done our best to keep you warm and dry, but this is England.

“On the upside, the view is enormous and almost everything you eat was grown or reared on our farm, so it’s fresh with minimal food miles

“We even have a tiny VIP room in an old shepherd’s hut. This seats four (just) but it is dry and warmer than outside.”

The reaction to the Diddly Squat restaurant has generally been positive.

On Twitter, one user posted: “A cracking start to the week. Great to enjoy @jeremyclarkson’s new Diddly Squat Farm restaurant this evening. Beef, beef and lots of local beef!”

Another said: “Having visited Diddly Squat Farm Shop and their new restaurant last week, I can honestly say that the food was so much better than Gordon Ramsay’s Street Burger and half the price! Thoroughly enjoyed the visit.”

However, not everyone was impressed, with food critic Jan Moir expressing mixed opinions in her column for the Daily Mail: “It’s okay, but can I be honest? It’s a bit pub chain.

“It’s just too overpriced for comfort, starting at £49 per head.”

The car enthusiast gained a new wave of fans throughout lockdown as he documented his progress in running his farm through the hit series, which broke records at the time as the highest-rated Amazon Prime show.

A second season has been confirmed, with Kaleb Cooper, Gerald Cooper, and Charlie Ireland all returning to help (and criticise) Clarkson’s farming adventure.

The restaurant is the latest addition to Diddly Squat, with a farm shop already open to the public.
