Jim Carrey has slammed the ‘spineless’ audience at the Oscars for applauding Will Smith when he won the Best Actor award just hours after he slapped Chris Rock on stage.

The actor made the comments during an appearance on CBS Mornings to host Gayle King, and claimed he would ‘sue for $200million’ if he was Rock.

He said: “I was sickened by the standing ovation.

“I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like this is a clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”

In response, King commented: “If anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would’ve been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested.”

“He should have been,” Carrey remarked. “I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200million because that video is going to be there forever.”

The star went on to add: “If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cos they said words.

“I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment.”

It comes as Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith – who the joke was about – broke her silence on the incident.

Taking to social media, she simply wrote: “This is a season for healing. And I’m here for it.”

The drama at the awards all started when Rock made a reference to Pinkett Smith’s shaved hairdo, as the comedian was reportedly unaware that she suffers from alopecia.

He said: “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”

Although Smith initially laughed, he then stormed onto the stage and struck the comedian before returning to his seat and yelling: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”
