Jim Carrey shared a savage painting of former First Lady Melania Trump following her departure from the White House.
The Hollywood actor, known for films such as The Mask and Bruce Almighty, famously ‘retired’ from acting – excluding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, of course – in 2022.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Carrey revealed he now strives ‘for un-exceptionalism’ and wants to be ‘frighteningly normal.’
Yet now and then, the Dumb and Dumber star finds himself back in the spotlight.
In the same year he ‘retired’ from acting, Carrey made headlines after calling out fellow actor Will Smith following the infamous Oscars slap.
At the 94th Academy Awards, Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Later, in an interview with CBS This Morning, Carrey expressed his disapproval over how the situation was handled, especially with Smith winning Best Actor for King Richard shortly after.
He said: “I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”
Host Gayle King then speculated: “If anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would’ve been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested.”
Leading Carrey to respond: “He should have been.”
On another occasion, The Truman Show actor raised eyebrows when he mocked Melania Trump in a piece of political art.
Melania, the wife of Donald Trump, served as the First Lady of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
Since leaving the White House, the Slovenian-American model has largely stayed out of the public eye.
Frequently, Carrey has expressed how he feels about the Trumps.
In a 2020 article written for The Atlantic, the comedian spoke out against the then-president and the Republican Party.
He declared that American lives had been ‘ruined’ by Trump’s presidency and called the now 78-year-old a ‘bourgeois New York con artist.’
Carrey also guest starred in the 46th season of Saturday Night Live and played current President Joe Biden.
When he announced his departure from the sketch show, he tweeted (per Fox News): “Though my term was only meant to be 6 weeks, I was thrilled to be elected as your SNL President… comedy’s highest call of duty.
“I would love to go forward knowing that Biden was the victor because I nailed that s***. But I am just one in a long line of proud, fighting SNL Bidens!”
Fox News also reported in January 2021 that Carrey shared political cartoons about Trump and notable Capitol rioters, alongside Democrat political figures in a seemingly more positive light.
Yet Carrey truly ruffled feathers when he decided to post a political image of Melania on X, formerly Twitter.
Multiple X users took to the platform and blasted the actor over the artwork, with one person arguing: “She did nothing bad.”
Another said: “How you fell from grace.”
“Let it go, Jim, you got your goal now. Can you focus on something more positive?” questioned somebody else.
Meanwhile, others found it funny, with one X user saying: “That’s actually a pretty good likeness. You’ve captured the apathy and validity.”
The illustration in question shows Melania smiling in front of a turquoise background with text in pink lettering reading: “Oh… and goodbye worst first lady. I hope the settlement can finance your life in the shallow end. Thx for nothing.”
