Johnny Depp fans have been warned by a legal expert over their social media ‘impact’ on the Amber Heard defamation trial

Daniel Gutenplan, an entertainment litigator and defamation expert, appeared on People magazine’s Every Day podcast and said it ‘frankly means nothing for the case’ that social media is ‘very pro-Depp’.

However, he did remark: “But it gives you an idea of how the public is signing on this.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Gutenplan shared his view on the case, saying: “Anyone in this world would love to have $50million, but I think the case is bigger than that. I think it’s a case and a war on public opinion.

“As much as he’d like to go get money in that pot of gold at the end of the lawsuit, I think he also has been taking this case all the way because he’s trying to regain his image in the court of public opinion.

“What you’re seeing day to day in the trial in terms of the dirty laundry that’s being aired… I think it doesn’t necessarily bear on the defamation case so much, but it bears on the public’s opinion of [Depp].”

Kate Moss Responds To Amber Heard Comment In Johnny Depp Trial

Weighing in on the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s chances of winning, the expert commented: “Defamation is very hard to prove.

“First and foremost, truth is an absolute defence to any defamatory statement. So regardless of the alleged defamatory statement, if a defendant can establish that it is true, the defence is going to win.”

The trial has entered its sixth and final week after it began on April 14. Depp launched it over a 2018 article in The Washington Post that he claims implied he physically assaulted his ex-wife, despite it not mentioning him by name.
