Karen is slowly becoming an extinct baby name worldwide!
In the Urban Dictionary, ‘a Karen’ is described as a person who ‘harasses the workers, asks to see the managers and threatens to sue,’ and they ‘refuse to wear a face mask’.
Apparently, Karens are also likely to ‘make solutions to others’ problems an inconvenience to her although she isn’t even remotely affected’.
Due to this, it’s quickly dropping off name popularity lists and has become a big no-no for many parents.
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), the name has dropped over 170 spots in the US and is now down to 831.
This marks Karen’s lowest ranking since 1927.
The last time the name was thriving was back in the sixties when, in 1965, it was the third most popular girls’ baby name. In that year alone, 33,000 Karens were born.
Over in the UK, just 23 Karens were born in 2015, 18 in 2016, and 16 in 2017. Despite a rise to 21 in 2018, the name quickly dropped down to 14 in 2019.

But it’s not just the name Karen that is losing its popularity. According to the Office of National Statistics, Gary, which is believed to be of German origin, is also dying out.
Back in the 1950s, it was the tenth most chosen name for three years in a row. However, its popularity came to an end in the sixties.
It turns out that parents are now searching for more ‘alternative’ and less traditional names. For example, look at the top baby names for boys in 2020 below…
