A birthday message sent to Meghan Markle by Prince William and Kate Middleton has sparked a backlash online.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took to Twitter to congratulate Markle on her 41st birthday, though the replies were far from complimentary, accusing ‘Kate and Wills’ of ‘taking the high road’.

The post read: “Wishing a happy birthday to the Duchess of Sussex!”

The Daily Star reported on numerous angry responses to the tweet, with one writing: “William and Catherine always take the high road. Always choose to be graceful and classy. Incredible.”

Another said that Markle ‘doesn’t deserve birthday wishes,’ while another described the Royals as ‘truly kind, global leaders and they always take the high road’.

According to the publication, the Duke and Duchess are ‘unlikely’ to receive any form of public reply as Prince Harry and Markle have toned down their usage of social media since relinquishing their Royal duties and moving away from the United Kingdom.

Although infrequent, there were some messages of congratulations and support for Markle under the tweet.

One wrote: “Peace, love and joy”

Another said: “May this daring lady live a long prosperous and happy life with her family.”

However, the backlash continued as the tweet was shared far and wide on the platform, with one post labelling her the ‘Duchess of Drama’.

Many did find some common ground, however, agreeing that the Cambridges’ tweet was ‘classy’.

Speaking of the Royal Family, Prince Harry has recently said he sees Princess Diana’s ‘legacy’ in his two children, Archie and Lilibet, whom he shares with Markle.

He commented at an awards ceremony: “There isn’t a day during the past two and a half decades where I haven’t thought about the mark she left not only on me and my brother [Prince William] but on all of our lives.

“My mother instilled in me… a drive to speak up and fight for a better world.

“I see her legacy every time I meet with families, young people and children from all corners of the world.

“And I see my mum’s legacy when I look at my own children every day.”
