Former Top Gear star Ken Block has died aged 55.

Block was a professional rally car driving champion who was best known for performing daring stunts behind the wheel.

He appeared in the rebooted version of Top Gear in 2016, alongside former Friends star Matt LeBlanc.

Block’s tragic passing was confirmed by his racing team, Hoonigan Racing Division, in an Instagram statement which said ‘he will be incredibly missed’.

It confirmed that the rally driver had died in a snowmobile accident.

The statement read: “It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today.

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband.

“He will be incredibly missed.”

The accident is believed to have taken place at Block’s ranch in northern Utah.

Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office told TMZ that the star was riding on a steep slope when his snowmobile flipped and landed on top of him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials added: “Mr Block was riding with a group but was alone when the accident occurred.

“We are saddened to hear of the loss of Kenneth and our hearts are with his family and friends so deeply affected.”

Just a day before his fateful accident, Block shared pictures of his snow-covered ranch on Instagram, along with blanketed snowmobiles.

He captioned the post: “This is how some mornings at my ranch in Utah look this time of year – freshly coated with snow!”

After hearing of his tragic passing, hundreds of fans have taken to social media and paid tribute.

One wrote: “No one ever wakes up in the morning knowing today is the day. Your impact on motorsports will live on in the hearts of us all who had the chance to witness your vision.”

Another added: “Rest in peace legend!”

While a third said: “RIP. You were truly inspirational to millions, thank you for everything you have done.”

“Too much sadness to start the year. RIP legend. You lived more lives than most of us,” someone else penned.

Block initially found fame as a rally car driver after he started competing in 2005.

He also competed in other action sports such as motocross and skateboarding.

Aside from his daring performances behind the wheel, Block co-founded the skating fashion brand DC Shoes in 1994 with his business partner, Damon Way.

Later, he became something of a viral internet sensation, wowing a young audience with his outlandish stunts.

This led to his creation of the successful Gymkhana YouTube series, which saw him drive on very dangerous tracks and obstacle courses, which has been viewed millions of times. 

Block is survived by his wife Lucy and his three children.
