Airline advice to help travelers identify their bags faster
Budget Irish carrier Ryanair says there are certain suitcase choices that can make it much harder to recognize your luggage after landing.
The airline recommends making your baggage stand out, particularly when collecting it from a busy baggage carousel where dozens of similar-looking suitcases may be circulating at the same time.
It advises: “Make it easier to spot your checked-in luggage on the carousel, especially if your luggage is black, navy or gray.
“Add a colourful luggage tag or ribbon to the handle so that there’s no confusion on arrival.”
Adding distinctive accessories can help travelers quickly identify their bags and reduce the likelihood of accidental mix-ups.
Airport experts explain why some luggage is harder to spot
The warning isn’t limited to airlines. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Frankfurt Airport, has also encouraged passengers to think carefully about the luggage they travel with. According to Schulte, the airport frequently encounters bags that are difficult to differentiate from one another.
He says: “Many people travel with black suitcases on wheels which makes identifying them very time-intensive.”
The issue has become significant enough that airport staff often spend extra time sorting and identifying nearly identical pieces of luggage.
Additional research appears to support these concerns. A report from The Economic Times found that black bags are the most commonly lost luggage color at airports.
Jamie Fraxier, a travel expert with US summer camp Wild Packs, explained to the publication: “Hard-sided black suitcases are the most common luggage type globally, making them both the hardest to identify and the most likely to go missing.
“This style of suitcase, which also includes wheels, is the default choice for travelers. But if your bag is misplaced, you don’t want it to be hard to distinguish from other luggage.”
The suitcase color travelers should avoid
According to Ryanair, travelers may want to avoid choosing black, gray, or navy suitcases whenever possible. Because these darker shades are so common, bags in these colors can appear almost identical when moving along baggage claim conveyor belts.
Opting for a brighter-colored suitcase can make it easier to spot your luggage immediately after a flight. It can also help airport staff identify and return your belongings more efficiently if they are ever misplaced.
For travelers looking to reduce the risk of lost or mistaken baggage, choosing a more distinctive suitcase color could be one of the simplest travel decisions they make.
