A dad has sparked a fierce debate after taking two daughters into an empty women’s bathroom.

An Oklahoma father has gone viral after a split-second parenting decision at a gas station sparked a heated debate online, and even ended with police being called.

Parents are often forced to make difficult decisions when travelling with young children, especially when public facilities aren’t designed with families in mind.

For many fathers, one recurring dilemma is deciding which restroom to use when accompanying young daughters.

Now, one dad’s attempt to keep his children safe has divided millions of people online, with some praising him for doing the right thing while others argued he crossed a line.

Dad makes split-second decision during road trip

Tyler Brodsky was driving home to Oklahoma from Florida with his two young daughters when they stopped at a QuikTrip gas station in Alabama.

According to World Manual, Brodsky decided to take the girls into the women’s restroom after finding it completely empty.

Explaining his reasoning in a TikTok video that has now amassed more than 15 million views, he wrote: “I’d rather do that than bring two little girls into a men’s bathroom full of grown men and dirty stalls.”

Brodsky later explained that before entering, he knocked on the door and announced that he was coming in with his daughters to ensure nobody was inside.

“I knocked and announced that I’m coming in with two girls,” he later told Fox News. “At this time, the bathroom was empty.”

What happened next quickly escalated into a confrontation that has since gone viral.

Angry customer storms into the restroom

While Brodsky was helping his daughters wash their hands, another customer entered the doorway and immediately began shouting.

Footage shows the man yelling: “There is a man with his two little girls in the women’s bathroom.”

The customer claimed his wife and his ‘very ill’ mother-in-law were waiting outside and accused Brodsky of taking too long inside.

Rather than responding aggressively, Brodsky focused on comforting his daughters, one of whom became visibly distressed and began crying during the confrontation.

He later described the man’s behavior as ‘immature.’

A QuikTrip manager soon intervened, closing the restroom door on the angry customer before apologizing to Brodsky and his daughters.

Police were called

Despite the manager stepping in, the confrontation didn’t end there.

According to World Manual, the man called police, insisting Brodsky had ‘no business’ being inside the women’s restroom.

He reportedly argued that a female employee should have escorted the children instead.

When officers arrived, however, Brodsky said they made it clear he hadn’t broken any rules.

“The officers let me know I was OK, I didn’t do anything wrong,” he explained in a follow-up TikTok.

He also pointed out that taking two little girls into a busy men’s restroom could have attracted criticism as well.

“Taking two little girls into the men’s restroom could be viewed as negatively as me going to the women’s restroom with my girls.”

According to Brodsky, police ultimately asked the other man to leave the store.

Officers comforted the frightened children

Although the encounter left his daughters upset, Brodsky praised both police officers and QuikTrip staff for the way they handled the situation afterward.

“The officers came, talked to my girls, made sure they felt safe,” he said.

“They put a good image of police officers for my girls growing up.”

He also thanked QuikTrip employees, who reportedly gave both girls complimentary frozen drinks after the incident.

“They gave my girls free ices, which is very kind of them.”

In a later update, Brodsky reassured viewers that his daughters were now ‘safe, happy, and doing great.’

Millions of people sided with the father

The viral clip quickly prompted thousands of comments, with the overwhelming majority supporting Brodsky’s decision.

“He was being a good dad,” one viewer wrote. “There was no one in there when he came in. The other guy is just being a jerk.”

Another questioned the behavior of the man confronting Brodsky.

“Excuse me, sir, why are you standing at the entrance watching two little girls in the bathroom?”

Many fathers and single parents also shared similar experiences, saying they had often found themselves facing the same difficult choice due to a lack of family restrooms.

Brodsky said the response made him realize the issue extends far beyond one uncomfortable encounter.

“This video brought to my attention something bigger than this incident,” he explained.

“I’ve received thousands of messages from moms, grandparents, caregivers who have been in similar situations.”

“This isn’t about one argument in a gas station. It’s about the fact that parents are often put in situations that aren’t comfortable. We’re simply trying to take care of our children and keep them safe.”

As the video spread online, the man who confronted Brodsky was identified as an independent contractor associated with Mississippi-based real estate company Overstreet Properties.

According to Fox News, the company later announced that it had ended its association with him.

“The conduct depicted in the video does not reflect the values of Overstreet Properties or the standards we expect of those who represent our organization,” the company said in a statement.

The business added that it was “no longer associated” with the individual shown in the viral footage.

Despite that outcome, Brodsky urged viewers not to harass the man.

“I don’t support anyone harassing anyone involved,” he said.

“I’m simply sharing what happened to my family and I hope the man that did this will come across this video and realize what he did was wrong and not do it to anyone else.”

The girls’ mother speaks out

As the debate continued, another unexpected voice entered the conversation.

The girls’ mother, Zoe Lavely, shared a lengthy Facebook post explaining that while she believed Brodsky had handled the confrontation appropriately, she was deeply uncomfortable with how widely the footage of their daughters had been shared.

According to the New York Post, Lavely wrote: “Even though their dad handled the situation well, what everyone doesn’t see is the fear a mother has seeing their kids exposed all over the media.”

She said watching the video repeatedly appear across social media had been heartbreaking.

“Every time I open my phone I see my 3-year-old daughter in tears. It destroys me every single time.”

Lavely also stressed that she supports fathers taking daughters into women’s restrooms when necessary.

“This is a need to be talked about situation,” she wrote.

“Every girl dad should feel welcome to take their daughter(s) in a safe, clean, private bathroom.”

Having herself been raised by a single father, she said she understands the difficult position dads often face.

“My dad was a single father to me and faced the same battles.”

Instead, her criticism focused on the decision to post footage showing the children’s faces online.

“This NEEDS to be a talked about situation. But it could have been a simple video explaining the situation without my kids’ faces all over the place.”

Lavely also alleged Brodsky had profited from the video’s popularity while failing to financially support their daughters — claims Brodsky strongly denied when contacted by the New York Post.

“I’m not going to discuss private family matters publicly because my daughters deserve better than that,” he said.

While opinions remain divided over whether filming the encounter was appropriate, the incident has reignited discussion around the lack of family restroom facilities in public places.

For Brodsky, the experience highlighted a dilemma many parents face every day.

“Hopefully it’ll bring attention to people that feel the need to berate a mom or dad trying to take care of their kids,” he said.

Whether people agree with his decision or not, the viral encounter has sparked a much broader conversation about parenting, privacy and how public spaces can better accommodate families.
