Parents are being warned over the use of ‘bop’ on the school playground – a new term that they won’t be happy about.

While the seemingly innocent word may sound like nothing to worry about, parents should be aware of its meaning.

For some, it may bring back old memories of the school disco, where children would ‘bop’ all night long to whatever was in the charts.

But the word has taken on a new meaning, and it’s being used to shame young girls.

And with bullying more frequently becoming a problem beyond the school gates, it’s one to look out for on and offline.

It seems to have developed thanks to social media sites where the phrase is trending.

Co-author of ‘Parenting in a Tech World,’ Titania Jordan, warned other parents that their children – particularly their daughters – might become targets, or already be one.

Her clip on TikTok explaining the term has now been viewed more than three million times.

Titania is keen for parents to recognize the social media slurs as a ‘teachable moment.’

She urged moms and dads to ‘discuss the lasting implications of hurtful words, gossip, or memes posted on social media.’

It seems the term ‘bop’ is now another way to refer to a woman or girl as promiscuous.

It’s a new development in ‘s***-shaming’, when others shame another girl or woman for their supposed s**ual activity.

And alarmingly, there are now more than 321,000 posts on TikTok with the hashtag ‘#bop.’

It has also been referred to as a ‘Lala bop.’

The author warned: “What’s ‘Lala bop?’

“I’m so glad you asked.

“It’s not kind and it’s a trend that started in late 2022 when a TikTok user posted a song by that same name.”

She added: “The song has since started being used in call out videos that shame people for allegedly dating around or being promiscuous.

“Lala bop has also evolved to become a general video call out for any sort of ill-favored behavior.

“Someone may be targeted really for anything deemed negative.

“Not surprisingly, lala bops are used extensively in cyberbullying situations.”

And she warned that parents of girls should be more aware than ever.

Titania said: “Unfortunately, lala bops are most commonly directed at females as it implies that they have a high ‘body count,’ which is slang for how many people someone has hooked up with.

“It may not even be true and could just be vicious rumors circulating.”
