Major Cause Of Death Update For Teen Found Dead After Friends Left Him Behind On Island Boat Trip
A major cause of death update has been issued after Nolan Wells was found dead, left behind on an island boat trip by his friends.
More than two weeks after 18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead following a boating trip with friends, investigators are still searching for answers.
The Mississippi teenager disappeared during a Fourth of July outing to Horn Island after traveling there with a group of friends. While the rest of the group returned to the mainland, Wells never made it back, the Independent reports.
His body was discovered in the water two days later, prompting an active investigation that has attracted national attention and fueled widespread questions about exactly what happened during his final hours.
Now, a major update has emerged after Wells’ family released the findings of an independent autopsy, with the results raising fresh questions rather than providing the closure they had hoped for.
Family seeks independent examination
Wells’ family commissioned an independent autopsy after expressing concerns about the early stages of the investigation and what they believed were unanswered questions surrounding his disappearance.
The examination was performed by renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell on July 10 and the preliminary findings were announced during a press conference at the NAACP National Convention in Chicago by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family.
Crump told reporters that the independent examination had not resolved the mystery surrounding Wells’ death, per the BBC.
“This pathologist cannot rule out if any intervening non-accidental factors contributed to or caused the death of Nolan Wells.”
He added that the findings left the family searching for even more answers. “We have more questions than answers at this time.”
The report noted one area requiring additional investigation: red discoloration in the soft tissue at the back of Wells’ head. While the finding was documented, Dr. Mitchell concluded that its significance could not be determined based on the evidence available to him.
The pathologist also explained that several important limitations prevented him from carrying out a complete assessment.
Because the official state autopsy had already been performed, Wells’ organs had been removed before the second examination took place. In addition, Mitchell said he did not receive Wells’ internal neck structures, including the trachea.
According to the report, retaining those structures after an initial autopsy is not uncommon when additional testing is required.
However, without examining them himself, Mitchell said he could not determine whether any injury to the neck contributed to Wells’ death.
The report also explained that the inability to directly examine Wells’ airway, lungs and stomach prevented the pathologist from answering several critical forensic questions.
Questions continue to surround final hours
Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island, a barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, with a group of high school friends.
Authorities have previously said investigators believe Wells voluntarily remained on the island while the others returned to shore, believing he would find another ride back later.
His family, however, has repeatedly questioned that account.
Crump has previously highlighted what he described as inconsistencies in witness statements, including differing accounts about whether Wells stayed behind willingly, why he was separated from the group and why his cellphone and car keys reportedly remained with his friends after they returned.
The attorney has also questioned early assumptions that Wells accidentally drowned, noting the teenager was an athlete who knew how to swim.
“This is a kid who knew how to swim.”
During Wednesday’s announcement, Crump stressed that investigators still needed to establish Wells’ condition before he entered the water.
“The condition of Nolan Wells before he entered the water would be the crux of the matter.”
Dr. Mitchell’s report outlined several questions that investigators have yet to answer, including whether Wells entered the water voluntarily, whether he was conscious beforehand, whether water was present in his airway and lungs, whether he suffered a brain injury and whether any injuries occurred before entering the water.
The pathologist also noted that he had not yet received the official toxicology results, meaning another potentially important piece of evidence remains outstanding.
Public attention has also focused on the behavior of some of the teenagers who were on the trip after Wells vanished, People reports.
Alongside conflicting accounts about the events on Horn Island, reports that messages and social media posts linked to some of those present were later deleted have only added to the growing speculation surrounding the case.
While those developments have prompted widespread discussion online and increased calls for transparency, investigators have not publicly stated that the deleted content is evidence of wrongdoing.
Authorities continue to say the friends have cooperated with the investigation, which remains active.
Calls for greater transparency grow louder
Wells’ parents say they continue to feel frustrated by what they describe as limited communication from investigators.
His mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, said she has barely heard from authorities since shortly after her son’s body was recovered.
“It’s heartbreaking and it’s concerning.”
She explained that the family’s concerns began almost immediately after officials indicated they believed Wells had drowned and did not suspect foul play.
According to Wells-Wonsley, investigators expressed that view less than an hour after her son’s body had been recovered.
That early conclusion prompted the family to seek independent legal representation and an outside forensic examination.
Crump is now calling on Mississippi authorities to provide Dr. Mitchell with all photographs, investigative observations and forensic materials gathered during the original examination so they can be independently reviewed.
He also said he hopes prosecutors will allow Mitchell to testify before any grand jury if one is convened as the investigation continues.
“We would hope that the district attorney would present Dr. Mitchell before the grand jury as well. We want all relevant information to be heard by the grand jury.”
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has continued to say its investigation remains active.
Officials have stated that Wells’ friends have cooperated with investigators throughout the inquiry, while the Mississippi medical examiner has not yet publicly released the findings from the official autopsy, per PBS.
That absence of information has only intensified public interest in the case.
National attention continues to build
The case has drawn significant attention across the country, with supporters continuing to push for a transparent investigation.
The independent autopsy was funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick through his Know Your Rights Camp organization, which has previously helped families secure independent forensic examinations in several high-profile cases.
Meanwhile, Rev. Al Sharpton, filmmaker Tyler Perry and former NFL star Terrell Owens have jointly offered a $125,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction if criminal wrongdoing is ultimately uncovered.
During Wells’ funeral earlier this week, Sharpton questioned why the teenager had been left behind on the island, why his belongings were reportedly returned without him and why his disappearance was not immediately reported.
Despite the growing national attention, Wells’ parents have maintained that their priority remains understanding exactly what happened to their son.
“The only question that we have is what happened to our son.”
For now, that question remains unanswered.
Cause of death update
Despite hopes that an independent examination would provide clarity, Dr. Mitchell ultimately concluded that both the cause and manner of Nolan Wells’ death remain undetermined.
The forensic pathologist wrote that, based on the evidence currently available, he could not rule out the possibility that non-accidental factors contributed to or caused Wells’ death.
He was also unable to determine whether Wells suffered injuries before entering the water, whether he inhaled water, or whether another medical event occurred beforehand because key anatomical structures had already been removed during the initial autopsy and decomposition limited the examination.
With the official autopsy results and toxicology report still pending, investigators continue to piece together what happened during Wells’ final hours.
Until those remaining questions are answered, one of the most closely watched death investigations in recent weeks remains unresolved, leaving Wells’ family still waiting for the explanation they have been seeking since the day their son never returned home.
