A man who endured 12 years of locked-in syndrome (LiS) has opened up about the moment he regained awareness and understood his reality.

Martin Pistorius, known as the ‘Ghost Boy,’ endured an unimaginable ordeal when he fell into a mysterious coma that lasted over a decade.

He was a typical child with a keen interest in gadgets until, at the age of 12, he began to experience a sudden and unexplained physical decline.

What initially appeared to be flu-like symptoms rapidly escalated into a complete shutdown of his body.

Unable to move, speak, or respond, he was misdiagnosed by doctors, who informed his parents that he had no cognitive function and would likely not recover.

Pistorius’ family was advised to care for him at home until his expected passing.

But at age 16, Pistorius became fully aware of his surroundings, trapped inside a body that refused to obey his commands.

For eight long years, he remained in a locked-in state, entirely conscious but unable to communicate.

Cleveland Clinic says people with LiS ‘have total paralysis but still have consciousness and their normal cognitive abilities.’

In his book ‘Ghost Boy,’ Pistorius describes the heartbreak of hearing his mother, overwhelmed by the agony of caring for her unresponsive son, say to him: “I hope you die,” unaware that he could understand every word.

Reflecting on this painful moment, he later wrote: “The rest of the world felt so far away when she said those words.”

Pistorius’ journey toward re-entering the world was painstakingly slow.

He told LADbible: “I remember around my 16th birthday, people talking about the stubble on my chin and wondering whether to shave me.

“It scared and confused me to listen to what was being said because, although I had no memories or sense of a past, I was sure I was a child and the voices were speaking about a soon-to-be man.

“I was able to hear, see, and understand everything around me, but I had absolutely no power or control over anything.”

A major turning point in his life was his deep dislike for the children’s TV show Barney, which he was forced to watch repeatedly.

He described his frustration, telling NPR: “I cannot even express to you how much I hated Barney.”

Determined to track time without a clock, he trained himself to observe how shadows moved throughout the day, providing himself with a small sense of control.

With time, Pistorius began to find ways to communicate.

He eventually gained the ability to use a voice synthesizer, which enabled him to share his experiences with the world.

Now, Pistorius is married and lives in England with his wife, Joanna.

He credits love as his guiding force, stating: “I’d experienced [love] as a boy and man, as a son, brother, grandson, and friend… Now it was lifting me closer to the sun than I ever thought I would fly.”
