Horrifying New Details From ‘House Of Horrors’ Where 16 Kids Were Found In Appalling Conditions Revealed
Horrifying new details have emerged after 16 kids were rescued from a rural Ohio home where authorities say they had been living in appalling conditions.
The children, who range in age from 18 months to 18 years old, were found inside a property in the small village of Hamden, around 60 miles southeast of Columbus, USA.
Four adults have since been arrested and charged with child endangerment.
Officials say the children appeared to have been hidden from the outside world for years, with some reportedly unable to speak and others requiring urgent medical care.
Children were found during an unrelated investigation
Authorities reportedly did not initially go to the home because of a child welfare complaint.
Instead, investigators arrived while carrying out an unrelated search warrant.
Court records cited by the Associated Press, per NBC, show a warrant had been issued for Gary Siders Jr. on misdemeanor indecent exposure charges related to alleged incidents in May. He has pleaded not guilty.
When officials entered the home, they discovered 16 children living in conditions described as ‘deplorable.’
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said authorities had no idea they were about to find so many children inside.
“We didn’t know there were going to be 16 kids there,” he said at a press conference, per AP.
The children were taken from the property and placed into temporary state custody.
Seven were transported to hospitals, including two who were flown to trauma centers. One child was reportedly in critical condition shortly after the rescue.
Officials describe horrifying conditions
Authorities have described the scene inside the home as one of the worst they had ever encountered.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said the children appeared to have spent most of their time in a room measuring around 12 feet by 12 feet.
Human waste was reportedly found throughout the area.
Cain said: “Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children.” He added: “Just a disgusting scene.”
Wilson was similarly shocked by what investigators discovered.
“They looked like almost feral animals,” he said. “It was terrible.”
He also described the evidence in the case as ‘beyond comprehension’ and said the conditions ‘really looked third world,’ according to ABC News.
At another point, Wilson reportedly called the scene ‘pure evil.’
Officials said some of the children were unable to speak, while one 18-year-old who was developmentally disabled reportedly could not write her own name.
Investigators believe the children may have spent much of the past four years confined inside the room.
Parents and grandparents arrested
The four adults arrested have been identified as Gary Siders Jr., 36, Elizabeth Siders, 33, Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina Siders, 67.
Authorities have described them as the children’s parents and grandparents.
They have each been charged with second-degree felony child endangering.
Prosecutor William Archer said the charges were filed at that level because the case involved “serious physical harm.”
All four have pleaded not guilty, and bond was set at $300,000 each.
The case is not being treated as human trafficking, with Archer describing it as an ‘intra-family situation,’ per ABC News.
An attorney for Gary Siders Sr. has urged people not to rush to judgment.
“We ask that the community at large, as well as anyone who might have an interest in this case, to take a deep breath, step back, and let the case play out and the facts play out,” attorney Dorian Baum told CBS.
Attorneys for Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders declined to comment to AP, while messages to Elizabeth Siders’ lawyer were not immediately returned.
Neighbors say they never saw the children
One of the most disturbing questions now facing the community is how the alleged neglect went unnoticed for so long.
Hamden has fewer than 1,000 residents, and neighbors say the area is usually quiet.
Several people living nearby said they had never seen children at the home.
Neighbor Joseph Stewart, 60, told the Independent he saw ‘no kids at all’ after the family moved in three houses away. He said: “It’s a sad situation.”
Another neighbor, Josh Odell, told WSYX-TV that he had a view of the backyard but had never seen a child outside.
“I really hope they all get better,” he said. “But, I mean, it obviously weighed on my conscience that I wished I could have done something.”
Investigators believe the family may have deliberately avoided systems that could have raised alarm.
The Vinton County Local School District said it had no records showing any of the children had ever been enrolled.
Officials also said the family appeared to have avoided creating medical and government records.
“These folks were pretty good at hiding these kids,” Wilson said.
He added that the family had moved around southern Ohio over the past two decades.
Community left stunned
The discovery has devastated locals, many of whom are now questioning how something so severe could happen nearby without anyone realizing.
Emily Collins, who owns VC Farm & Floral in nearby McArthur, told AP: “Right under our noses and nobody was able to help them sooner.”
She added: “It’s just crazy that all the wonderful things going on in our little Hallmark town and this is what puts us on the radar. It’s really sad.”
Photos from outside the home showed police tape, trash, discarded tires, children’s toys, a high chair and other debris around the property.
The home’s windows and doors were later boarded up.
Investigators are now reviewing whether the family had ever previously been reported to child services agencies.
Wilson said officials believe the children’s lack of contact with schools, doctors and public services helped keep them hidden.
Ohio University associate professor Jacqueline Yahn, who specializes in rural education and poverty, told AP that those missing points of contact can be crucial.
“When kids are isolated or not participating, you don’t have someone who’s trained to know the clues,” she said.
“A well-check is called that for a reason: They’re checking for well-being and development.”
Investigation is continuing
Authorities have not yet released full details about each child’s current condition.
Child welfare officials now have temporary custody of the children, and investigators continue to examine the family’s history and whether earlier warning signs were missed.
Wilson said officials believe the situation could have become even worse if authorities had not arrived when they did.
“I think if they would have waited another 24 hours, that there was a very high probability that we’d be dealing with a death or multiple deaths of these children,” he said, according to ABC News.
The case has drawn comparisons to other extreme child abuse cases in the US, including the Turpin family case in California.
For now, officials say their priority is ensuring the children receive medical care, protection and support after what investigators have described as years of isolation and severe neglect.
Wilson vowed: “Justice will be served for these children.”
