The passenger of a ‘modern-day’ Titanic made an eerie prophecy just minutes before a cruise disaster killed 32.

One haunting comment made by a teenage passenger moments before one of the world‘s deadliest cruise disasters has left people chilled more than a decade later.

As Costa Concordia sailed through the Mediterranean on January 13, 2012, 17-year-old Stefania Vincenzi stepped onto the deck with her boyfriend to admire the night sky.

The luxury liner was gliding past the Italian island of Giglio, and everything appeared perfect.

Then her boyfriend looked out across the water and made a remark that would soon become eerily prophetic.

Just minutes later, the massive cruise ship struck rocks off the Tuscan coast, tearing open its hull and triggering a disaster that claimed 32 lives.

The tragedy is once again being revisited in Netflix‘s documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea, with survivors sharing new accounts of the terrifying night.

A dream holiday turned into a nightmare

According to The Sun, Stefania Vincenzi had boarded Costa Concordia with her mother, Maria, to celebrate her 50th birthday.

The floating resort was among the largest cruise ships in the world at the time, boasting restaurants, casinos, theatres and lavish interiors.

As the vessel sailed past the Italian island of Giglio on the evening of January 13, 2012, nobody on board imagined the luxury cruise was only minutes away from catastrophe.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., the 950-foot liner collided with submerged rocks after deviating from its planned route during what prosecutors later described as an unauthorized close pass, or ‘salute,’ to the island.

The impact ripped a gash estimated at around 70 metres (230 feet) along the port side of the ship, flooding the engine room and causing an immediate power failure, according to official Italian investigation findings.

Passengers initially believed the violent jolt was simply a mechanical fault.

Lights flickered out, plates smashed across restaurant floors and confusion spread rapidly as conflicting announcements urged people to remain calm and even return to their cabins.

Only later would the true scale of the emergency become clear.

Among those onboard were Stefania and her boyfriend, Andrea.

Just minutes before the collision, the teenage couple had stepped outside together to admire the Mediterranean night.

Stefania later recalled opening the deck doors and feeling the cool sea breeze as the ship glided silently through the water.

Everything seemed peaceful.

Andrea wrapped his arms around her as they watched the lights shimmer across the sea.

Then he quietly made a remark that would haunt her forever. “It feels like The Titanic.”

Stefania admitted the comparison immediately gave her an uneasy feeling.

“At that moment I felt a little strange,” she recalled. “But it’s crazy, right? So, you just leave that thought behind.”

Only moments later, Costa Concordia struck the rocks.

The throwaway comment had become a chilling prophecy.

Chaos unfolded as thousands fought to escape

As water poured into the damaged ship, panic quickly spread.

According to survivor accounts featured in the Netflix documentary, many passengers received repeated announcements insisting the situation was under control despite the vessel rapidly taking on water.

American passengers John and Meghan Scimone were travelling with their 14-month-old daughter, Lila, when they felt the impact.

“I knew something was terribly wrong,” John recalled.

“My survival instinct kicked in.”

The family rushed towards the lifeboat deck alongside hundreds of other passengers, only to discover confusion and delays.

Official investigations later found that there was a lengthy wait before the order to abandon ship was finally given.

By the time lifeboats were launched, Costa Concordia had developed such a severe list that several could no longer be lowered safely.

Some passengers found themselves climbing across walls and ceilings as the ship rolled further onto its side.

Others jumped into the freezing sea.

British dancer Rose Metcalf, who worked aboard the ship, spent hours helping passengers evacuate before becoming trapped herself.

She was eventually rescued by helicopter after flashing a torch towards emergency crews searching the stricken liner.

The captain became the face of the disaster

Attention soon turned to Captain Francesco Schettino.

Italian prosecutors alleged that he delayed ordering an evacuation before leaving the ship while hundreds of passengers and crew remained onboard.

A recording of a furious phone call between Schettino and Italian Coast Guard officer Gregorio De Falco quickly became one of the defining moments of the disaster.

During the exchange, De Falco repeatedly ordered the captain to return to his ship.

Schettino refused.

Following a lengthy trial, he was convicted in 2015 of multiple counts of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship before the evacuation was complete.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison, a sentence later upheld on appeal.

However, the Netflix documentary also explores whether the tragedy involved more than one fatal mistake.

According to The Sun, evidence examined in the programme suggests a misunderstanding between Schettino and the helmsman played a crucial role in the collision.

When Schettino reportedly ordered “hard to port,” investigators say the helmsman instead turned the ship to starboard for around 13 seconds, steering it directly towards the rocks.

Experts featured in the documentary argue that had the original command been correctly executed, the collision may have been far less severe—or possibly avoided altogether.

One family never made it home together

For Stefania, surviving the disaster came at an unimaginable cost.

During the chaotic evacuation, her mother insisted on returning to their cabin to collect a life jacket and change her shoes because she could no longer walk safely in high heels.

Stefania pleaded with her not to go. The pair never saw each other again.

Although Maria phoned her daughter to say she was about to board a lifeboat, she never reached safety.

According to The Sun, it took almost two years before Maria’s body was finally recovered from the wreck.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Stefania said her mother had recently gone into remission after battling cancer, making the birthday cruise feel like the beginning of a happier chapter.

Instead, it ended in heartbreak.

More than 4,200 passengers and crew were onboard Costa Concordia that night. Thirty-two people lost their lives.

The wreck remained partially submerged off Giglio Island until one of the largest maritime salvage operations ever undertaken removed it in 2014.

More than a decade later, the disaster continues to fascinate audiences around the world.

But among all the stories of survival, heroism and tragedy, one small moment still stands out.

Minutes before one of Europe’s worst cruise ship disasters unfolded, a teenage girl’s boyfriend looked out across the calm Mediterranean Sea and quietly said: “It feels like The Titanic.”
