Crew Member Reveals The ‘Secret Codes’ You Never Want To Hear On A Cruise Ship And What They Mean
A crew member from a popular cruise line has revealed what the secret codes mean onboard, including ones you definitely don’t want to hear.
If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you’ll know they’re very organised and have a procedure in place for pretty much anything that could happen while guests are onboard.
Pretty much all those procedures come with their own code words, which mean staff can communicate to one another over the ship tannoys without alarming passengers on board.
At least that was the case, before one cruise ship worker decided that she would share all the secret codes on social media so the nosy people among us would know exactly what they mean if we ever hear them.
Amber Olivia, who posts from the handle @amboliviaa on TikTok, regularly creates videos explaining what the secret codes mean, while also sharing lots of behind the scenes content on what it’s really like to live on a cruise ship.
In one video, aptly titled Cruise Ship Secrets, Amber revealed many cruise ship workers will dive into their beds for little micro naps while still wearing their uniforms.
“Cruise ship life moves so fast and so do our breaks. What a lot of us do is, we will go and have a nap in our uniform,” she explained. “So we will set our alarm for five minutes, I even once set my alarm for one while minute just so I could close my eyes.
“And we would lie in uniform just so we could get the most amount of time asleep, and then the alarm will go off, we’ll be up, we’ll check ourselves in the mirror and we’ll be out. It happens. These people who don’t like their outside clothes in their bed, cruise ship life is not for you.”

Emergency cruise ship codes and what they mean
In another video, Amber spoke about the different secret code words you might hear while on a cruise in cases of emergency.
“So, when you’re on a ship, you basically will hear loads of different code words and it’s basically just to avoid people getting scared, confusion, and any of that gossip,” she said, before announcing she would be revealing what they all mean. No gate keeping here, so let’s get into it…
Code Alpha: This will usually be followed by a location to alert the medical team they need to head to a medical emergency
Code Bravo: This code often be followed by a deck or zone number to alert staff to a fire somewhere on the ship
Code Charlie: This call means there is a security threat, most commonly referring to a physical altercation or a dangerous passenger
Code Delta: This refers to damage to the ship, including flooding, a full breach or structural problems
Code Echo: This means the vessel is drifting towards danger, usually when there has been a loss of propulsion
Code Oscar: One of the most urgent calls, this is the emergency call for man overboard to alert the captain and search and rescue teams
Code Papa: This refers to a pollution spill, usually meaning fuel or waste is leaking into the surrounding sea
Code X-Ray: This will usually signal a serious medical emergency, often involving a death, or on some cruise lines it can mean they are looking a suspicious person or item
Other cruise ship codes and what they mean
Code Red: This code suggests there has been outbreak of illness that’s likely to spread, like norovirus
Code Yellow: This is an illness that isn’t contagious but is serious for the impacted passengers
Code Black: This means there has been a death onboard the ship
Code White: This refers to a violent person where security personnel are needed
So, while some of the secret code words aren’t quite as severe as others, you probably don’t want to hear any of them while you’re enjoying a lovely, peaceful and relaxing holiday. But at least you’ll be able to have a nosy at what’s going on if you do…
