Nolan Wells’ Best Friend Explains Why He Skipped Funeral After Leaving Him On Island
Following Nolan Wells’ tragic death, his friends have revealed the reason why they didn’t go to his funeral.
The mystery surrounding the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells continues to grip the nation, with fresh revelations emerging as investigators work to determine exactly what happened after he disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip.
Wells vanished after traveling to Horn Island, off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, with a group of friends on July 4. While the rest of the group returned to the mainland, the teenager never made it back.
His body was discovered floating in the water two days later, launching an investigation that has attracted national attention and prompted growing calls for transparency.
Although authorities have maintained that the investigation remains active, many questions surrounding Wells’ final hours remain unanswered.
Family continues searching for answers
Since Wells’ death, his parents have repeatedly challenged aspects of the official timeline and pushed for an independent investigation.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, has questioned inconsistencies in witness statements, including differing accounts of whether Wells intended to remain on the island and why his cellphone and car keys reportedly stayed with his friends after they returned to shore.
The family later commissioned an independent autopsy performed by renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell.
The preliminary examination concluded that both the cause and manner of Wells’ death remain undetermined.
Mitchell wrote that he could not rule out whether “non-accidental factors” contributed to Wells’ death and said important forensic questions could not be answered because key anatomical structures had already been removed during the official state autopsy before he examined the body.
The official autopsy findings and toxicology report have still not been publicly released.
National attention continues to grow
The case has become one of the most closely followed death investigations in recent weeks.
Rev. Al Sharpton, filmmaker Tyler Perry and former NFL star Terrell Owens have helped fund a reward for information if criminal wrongdoing is ultimately uncovered, while former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp financed the family’s independent autopsy.
Supporters have continued calling for investigators to release additional evidence as public interest in the case grows.
Meanwhile, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has repeatedly said Wells’ friends have cooperated with investigators and that no criminal charges have been announced.
Despite that, scrutiny surrounding those who accompanied Wells to Horn Island has only intensified.
Why Nolan Wells’ friends didn’t attend his funeral
Questions were raised after many people noticed that the teenagers who had been with Wells on the island did not appear to attend his funeral.
Now, Warren Hudson, who described himself as one of Wells’ closest friends since middle school, has explained why.
Speaking on The Officer Tatum Show, Hudson said the group chose not to attend because they had received threats and feared for their safety.
According to Hudson, they wanted to be there but believed attending could place them at risk.
“I wish I could have been there,” he said.
Hudson also rejected suggestions that he and Wells had grown apart before the tragedy.
“Nolan and I were still just as close, and he was just as close with my friends as anyone else.”
Why they didn’t immediately report him missing
Hudson also addressed another question that has surrounded the investigation from the very beginning: why the group did not initially believe Wells was missing.
He said Wells appeared ‘completely fine’ throughout the July 4 celebrations and explained that it was common for people to become separated during large gatherings on Horn Island, per the New York Post.
“I talked to Nolan a couple times… but it wasn’t like I was strictly sitting there talking to Nolan the whole day,” Hudson said.
According to Hudson, nobody immediately panicked because visitors often spend hours away from their phones while celebrating on the island.
“People come out here, especially on the Fourth and Memorial Day… they come out here to celebrate, and people get on the water to be off their phones, first off.”
He said the group believed Wells had simply stayed behind with other people or had fallen asleep elsewhere.
“We honestly thought Nolan was passed out at someone’s house or was still hanging out with other people.”
Authorities have previously said investigators believe Wells voluntarily remained on Horn Island while the others returned to shore, believing he would find another ride back later.
His family, however, continues to dispute that account and says they are still waiting for answers about what happened during Wells’ final hours.
As Wells’ mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, has repeatedly said, there is one question that still matters most: “The only question that we have is what happened to our son?”
