Woman Buried Alive ‘Spent 11 Days Trying To Fight Her Way Out Of Coffin’
A woman who was buried alive ‘spent 11 days trying to fight her way out of her coffin.’
A chilling case that shocked people around the world continues to spark debate years later, after a family claimed a woman may have been buried alive.
The horrifying incident centered around Rosangela Almeida dos Santos, a 37-year-old woman from the town of Riachao das Neves in northeastern Brazil.
What began as a tragic death quickly turned into a mystery involving alleged screams from a cemetery, claims of movement inside a sealed coffin, and disturbing evidence that left relatives convinced something had gone terribly wrong.
While authorities ultimately reached their own conclusions about the case, the story remains one of the most unsettling burial mysteries in recent history.
Rosangela was declared dead after a medical emergency
According to reports at the time, Rosangela had been admitted to Hospital do Oeste in Barreiras, Brazil, after experiencing severe fatigue, per Punch NG.
Medical records indicated that she suffered two cardiac arrests before doctors declared her dead.
Her death certificate listed septic shock as the official cause of death.
Rosangela had reportedly experienced health issues throughout much of her life, including fainting spells dating back to childhood. Family members said she had regularly taken anticonvulsant medication.
Following her death, relatives gathered to mourn at a wake before she was laid to rest at Senhora Santana Cemetery on January 29, 2018.
At the time, nobody suspected anything unusual.
But less than two weeks later, shocking claims would emerge that transformed the burial into an international news story.
Neighbors reported hearing terrifying sounds
Eleven days after Rosangela’s funeral, residents living near the cemetery allegedly began hearing strange noises coming from her tomb.
Several locals claimed they heard banging sounds, groans, and what they believed were screams.
One resident, Natalina Silva, later told Brazilian media that she initially assumed children were playing a prank.
“When I got there right in front of the tomb, I heard banging from inside it,” she recalled per the Irish Mirror.
“I thought the kids who play around the cemetery were playing a joke on me.”
But then she claimed she heard something even more disturbing.
“Then I heard her groan twice, and after those two groans she stopped.”
Word quickly spread throughout the town.
Concerned neighbors contacted Rosangela’s family, who rushed to the cemetery to investigate the alarming reports.
What happened next only deepened the mystery.
Family members opened the tomb
After hearing the claims from residents, Rosangela’s relatives decided to exhume the coffin.
Video footage from the scene showed crowds gathering at the cemetery as local men removed the heavy coffin from its burial place.
Hundreds of people reportedly flocked to the site as rumors spread across the community.
When the coffin was finally opened, family members claimed they discovered several disturbing details.
Rosangela’s mother, Germana de Almeida, said her daughter’s body appeared to show signs of injuries that had not been present during the funeral, per the Independent.
According to relatives, there were wounds on her hands and forehead.
Even more chillingly, they claimed the nails securing the coffin lid appeared loose.
“She had tried to open the lid,” Germana alleged.
“Even the nails that had been hammered in were loose. Her hands were injured, like she had been trying to get out.”
Claims of scratches and blood inside the coffin
The family also reported finding what they believed were signs of a struggle inside the coffin.
According to multiple reports, scratches could allegedly be seen on the interior of the casket.
Relatives claimed there were traces of blood inside.
Cotton wool that had reportedly been placed in Rosangela’s ears and nostrils during funeral preparations had also become dislodged.
Some family members further alleged that her body was positioned differently from how she had originally been laid to rest.
These details convinced many of Rosangela’s loved ones that she may have regained consciousness after being buried.
The possibility that she had awakened underground and spent days trying to escape horrified both her family and the wider public.

Crowds gathered at the cemetery
As news spread, large crowds reportedly gathered at Senhora Santana Cemetery.
One local resident, Ana Francisco Dias, told Brazilian television that hundreds of people arrived to witness the exhumation.
“There were more than 500 people who came here and packed the cemetery,” she said.
“Everybody went to see.”
Some people present also claimed Rosangela’s body felt unusually warm when it was removed from the coffin.
The observations fueled further speculation that she had not actually died when she was first buried.
However, experts later urged caution regarding such claims.
Body temperature can be affected by multiple environmental factors, and warmth alone is not considered proof that someone remained alive.
Nevertheless, the allegations continued to spread rapidly online and through international media coverage.
Authorities launched an investigation
Following the family’s claims, police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rosangela’s death and burial.
Officials interviewed family members, witnesses, and others connected to the case.
Hospital do Oeste stated that it would cooperate fully with authorities and provide all necessary medical information.
Investigators sought to determine whether there was any evidence supporting the theory that Rosangela had been mistakenly declared dead.
Police also examined the claims surrounding the reported screams and banging heard near the cemetery.
At the same time, questions emerged about whether those involved in opening the grave could potentially face legal consequences for disturbing a burial site without authorization.
The investigation attracted significant media attention both inside Brazil and internationally.
Officials reached a different conclusion
Despite the family’s heartbreaking suspicions, authorities eventually concluded there was no evidence that Rosangela had been buried alive.
Reports later indicated that investigators believed many of the claims about screams and noises coming from the cemetery may have been based on rumors.
Civil authorities maintained that Rosangela had died before her burial and was not alive inside the coffin.
While the family remained convinced something was wrong, officials did not find evidence to support the theory that she survived underground for days.
Even so, the case continued to fascinate people because of the eerie circumstances surrounding it.
The combination of reported screams, alleged injuries, loose coffin nails, and claims of blood inside the casket created a story that many found impossible to forget.
