The record-breaking Broadway musical was set to make the leap from stage to screen next year but Disney has announced that they have ‘fast-tracked’ the release of the film on Disney+, making it available to millions of households around the world.
Fans of the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton will no doubt all be rejoicing in good voice, literally, after it was announced today that Disney has pushed forward the release by a whole year from 2021, to July 3rd 2020.
Creator of the Broadway sensation Lin-Manuel Miranda shared the news on his official Twitter account by candidly posting to his 3.1 million followers: “It’s only a matter of time…Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+”.

The news that Hamilton will be available for viewers to watch on Disney+ this year will no doubt excite both fans of the musical and musical theatre fans in general, as the film was already being tipped to be one of next year’s biggest cinematic releases.
Discussing the early release of the film, Robert A. Iger, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company, said: “We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind ‘Hamilton’ to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned”.
Addressing the reason for the fast-tracking, Iger added: “In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful.”
Hamilton was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda and debuted on Broadway in 2015 and is already one of the most popular and successful musicals of all time as it tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton.
The musical boasts a very diverse cast and features a mix of hip-hop, soul, pop and R&B music and has been praised for the way it’s told the story of America’s past for a current audience. Miranda will also reprise his role as Hamilton for the film.
