Love Island bosses at ITV have released a statement defending the show’s host, Laura Whitmore, after fans accused her of ’s***-shaming’ one of the contestants.

According to reports, 427 viewers complained to Ofcom following comments she made during last week’s Aftersun episode about Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu supposedly flirting with one of the other Islanders at Casa Amour, despite telling Davide Sanclimenti she ‘stayed loyal’.

Whitmore said: “Once again Ekin-Su swore that nothing happened with George and it seems Davide doesn’t believe her.” She then burst into laughter and probed the celebrity panel about what they thought about it, which viewers did not appreciate.

The moment was slammed by Ekin-Su’s official Twitter account, which is being run by her friends and family.

“The fact that the s***-shaming is being passed off as banter and good television is very concerning at this rate,” they penned.

The channel has now insisted they ‘do not condone trolling against our host or Islanders’.

The official statement read: “Laura is the presenter of the show, and part of that role is to pose questions to the panel and discuss events in the villa.

“We do not condone trolling against either our host or our Islanders and any subsequent elevation of these comments.”

The spin-off show also came under fire for having Jacques O’Neil on as a guest so soon after his departure from the villa. The 23-year-old has been highly vocal about the fact he gave up his place on the show to protect his mental health.

ITV stated: “We had various measures in place to ensure Jacques’ welfare was prioritised at all times ahead of and during his appearance on Aftersun.

“This included a full briefing with show producers to outline the show’s content and likely questioning, a conversation with Laura before and after the show was recorded, and chaperoning from both a welfare producer and a member of his family while he was in studio.”

They added: “Should an Islander not wish to participate in the Aftersun recording, we would always respect that decision.”
