A woman has claimed a male doctor refused to tie her fallopian tubes because she ‘wasn’t married’.
Sarah-Jo Baskin took to TikTok to open up about the conversation which took place right after she had given birth to her second child, aged 27.
She claims she was told she could not have the procedure as ‘a woman should not make that decision’.
Explaining what happened, she said: “I was 27 years old. I had just had my second child and I was talking to the doctor about getting my tubes tied because at that point I did not want any more children.
“The labour and delivery almost killed me and my son, so I was like, nope, don’t want any more.
“When I asked him why, he said, ‘you’re not married’. And I said, ‘what does that have to do with anything?’.”
She added that the male professional told her that ‘it’s best that a man and a woman make that decision together,’ and encouraged her not to ‘make that decision’ on her own.
Confused by his answer, she asked: “What does that have to do with anything? This is my body and I want to have my tubes tied.”
Allegedly, he then replied: “I’m not tying your tubes, I do not think a woman should make that decision.”
Many viewers were outraged by the doctor’s response, arguing this shouldn’t be ‘legal’.
One wrote: “I don’t understand how this is so common and how it’s even legal?”
“I don’t think he should be practising medicine,” another added.
