Margot Robbie has said that her Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has been cancelled and now fans are calling for Johnny Depp to return.

The Suicide Squad actress had been attached to star in a female-led adventure after Depp was dropped from the movies.

This happened in 2018 after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in which she made claims of domestic abuse.

Disney then announced that it would be rebooting the franchise, with Robbie set to lead the new series of films.

However, there seems to have been a change of plan.

Robbie has admitted that her own Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been cancelled and will no longer be going ahead.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, The Wolf of Wall Street star revealed: “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Series producer Jerry Bruckheimer had previously announced that two Pirates of the Caribbean projects were in the works, Robbie’s reboot and a Disney+ spinoff.

But now that the film is no longer going ahead, speculation has begun to rise in what direction the franchise is heading it

One question that has been raised is the possibility of Depp returning.

Fans have used the news surrounding Robbie’s movie to discuss the former lead star returning to his iconic role.

On social media, one person commented: “Love Margot but this is a win, hope they bring back Johnny.”

Another fan added: “OMG YESSSSSSSS! Guys, this can only mean one thing… Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack Sparrow!!!”

“Probably means Johnny Depp is coming back I imagine,” a third person commented.

Another person mentioned: “Good. Johnny Depp is Pirates of the Caribbean, he created that franchise, it’s like saying someone else should be Iron Man instead of Robert Downey Jr.”

A fifth fan added: “I agree Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp does not work.

“Now Disney bring back Johnny Depp and have Margot Robbie be in it too.”

As reported by the Daily Express, early discussions are rumoured to have taken place between Disney and Depp.

It is also rumoured that the House of Mouse has started drafting stories for the actor.

The deal apparently includes Depp returning as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

During his highly publicised trial against Heard, Depp expressed his disappointment in not being able to give his character a proper send-off, as a sixth film was originally planned for him to star in.

The Daily Express added that Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom are also reportedly in discussions about coming back to the series with Depp.

They have speculated that the Disney+ show will revolve around Knightly’s character being a pirate lord and this opens the door up for her on-screen husband to return to the franchise.

Both Knightly and Bloom made cameos in 2017’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales, but prior to that, they last appeared in 2007’s Dead Man’s Chest.

While this news will certainly excite fans, they should try and contain it as nothing has been announced yet and it is only a rumour.
