Martha Stewart is facing a backlash after revealing her cat, Princess Peony, died in a freak accident at her home.

The star took to Instagram and shared a picture of a grave that had been dug for her pet that had apparently been ‘accidentally’ killed by her four dogs who ‘mistook her for an intruder’.

She wrote: “Burying the beautiful and unusual Princess Peony. The four dogs mistook her for an interloper and killed her defenceless little self. I will miss her very badly. RIP beauty.”

Shocked social media users shared their anger at the dogs and blasted the 80-year-old for not keeping the animal safe.

One penned: “That’s horrific! I wish I had never read this. That poor beautiful baby… This makes me so sad and sick to read.”

“What the f*** Martha?” asked another. “Maybe don’t have animals if you can’t keep them safe. This is absolute irresponsibility.

“I would have a hard time keeping dogs that killed my cat. This is not cool. Pack animals or not, this is uncalled for. Dogs and cats can co-exist.”

A third fumed: “Poorly trained dogs. The dogs should have been temperament tested. They attack a cat and kill it, then they can attack a small child.

“Dogs can see small animals and small children as prey. Chows have a very high prey drive. This disgusts me. She has access to good trainers, too, along with enough space to keep the cat separated from the dogs.

“That cat died a violent death. Shame on its owner.”

However, others sent well wishes to the lifestyle guru. One was from Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo, who wrote: “So Sorry,” alongside a heart emoji.

“So sorry Martha,” added a second. “Sending comfort and hugs your way.”

A third mused: “I’m so sorry for your loss. May your beautiful baby rest in peace.”
