Martin Scorsese says the horror movie Pearl is so ‘disturbing’ that he couldn’t sleep after watching it.

The Goodfellas director wrote a rare review for the 2022 psychological slasher film, directed by Ti West, and sent it to A24.

Pearl follows a young woman (played by Mia Goth) who lives with her paralysed father on their Texas farm. It’s a prequel to West’s other A24 film, X.

Scorsese penned in his review: “Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema. You feel it in every frame.

Pearl makes for a wild, mesmerising, deeply – and I mean deeply – disturbing 102 minutes. West and his muse and creative partner Mia Goth really know how to toy with their audience… before they plunge the knife into our chests and start twisting.”

The Wolf of Wall Street director added: “I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.”

It appears as though Scorsese isn’t the only fan of Pearl, as it currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 88%.

Over on Twitter, people have also been raving about the horror movie.

Mia Goth has a 6-minute monologue in #PearlMovie that will absolutely blow your mind!” one tweeted. “This was an Oscar-worthy performance no doubt and the way Mia portrays Pearl’s shifting personality while still making the audience feel a sense of empathy for her struggles is brilliant!”

Referencing this, another added: “One of the best monologues in cinematic history.”

A third penned: “When I watch a movie, I’m not really thinking about whether I like the story. I’m watching the director’s technique and craft unfold, seeing how they create and destroy empathy through their camera and actors. With that said. Ti West’s Pearl (2022) is astonishing.”

Pearl is available to watch in US theatres now. It is also available for preorder through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google, Vudu Fandango and AMC.
