A Marvel stuntwoman and actress has been rushed to hospital and is ‘unable to walk’ after New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Carrie Bernans, 29, starred in Black Panther as a member of the Wakandan army The Dora Milaje.

Along with her work on the successful Marvel film, she has also worked on Avengers: Endgame, Luke Cage and S.W.A.T.

Reports have emerged that she was involved in a near-fatal accident on New Year’s Eve.

According to People, Bernans – who had recently become a mother for the first time – was left critically injured after a driver crashed into an outdoor dining area at the Chirp restaurant in Manhattan, near Madison Square Garden.

Her representative confirmed to the outlet that she suffered several broken bones in the crash and is currently in stable condition in the hospital. Fortunately, her child was not present at the time of the incident.

Taking to Instagram, Bernans’ mother uploaded a series of photos to show the extent of The Colour Purple actress’ injuries.

In one image, her face is bloody and swollen with chipped teeth, while a second photo shows her lying in a hospital bed with bruising on her hands.

The caption reads: “She’s still in so much pain and can’t answer calls at this time, but appreciate the messages.

“This was a traumatic incident. Please keep Carrie in your thoughts and prayers. She’s in so much pain but healing.

“She has a few broken bones, fractures, and chipped teeth but thanking God that she’s alive… Police caught him shortly after and arrested him. Amidst the chaos of the New Year’s incident, she’s holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself.”

A police statement has detailed the events leading up to the incident – which occurred amid a police foot chase after officers were informed of a physical assault involving the 44-year-old male driver of a black Mercedes and a 34-year-old female passenger.

It reads: “Officers on foot attempted to de-escalate the situation and ordered the male operator of the vehicle to put the vehicle into park. The male failed to obey the officers’ orders and fled westbound on 33rd Street before making a right turn onto 7th Avenue counter flow to traffic.

“The Mercedes then turned onto westbound West 34th Street where he mounted the sidewalk and began travelling westbound.

“The male then struck a food cart and two 39-year-old female pedestrians, a 31-year-old female pedestrian, and a 29-year-old female pedestrian.”

Officers were able to apprehend ‘the operator’, but two officers were injured in the incident, along with the passenger of the Mercedes.

The driver is currently in Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, per CBS News.

Speaking to the outlet, Chrip restaurant owner Boris Torres recalled the incident: “It’s crazy. This is not the first time that something happened on New Year’s here.

“It happened to us maybe like three years ago. Not a car, but somebody robbed multiple stores.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be my insurance or the insurance of the car. I gotta go up to the precinct to get the report.”
