Actress Mary Mara has died, aged 61, after reportedly ‘drowning in a New York river’. 

According to a New York State Police statement, the Law and Order star’s body was discovered at St Lawrence River in Cape Vincent on the morning of June 26.

Reportedly, an investigation is ongoing.

The statement is believed to have noted: “The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming.

“The victim’s body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.”

Mara’s brother-in-law, Scott Dailey, reportedly stated that the 61-year-old was at her sister’s summer home at the time the ‘apparent swimming accident’ took place.

The actress’s manager, Craig Dorfman, confirmed the tragedy to People magazine. Apparently, he said he would remember her as ‘one of the finest actresses I ever met’.

He reportedly commented: “I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in Mad Forest off-Broadway.

“She was electric, funny, and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.”

After hearing the heartbreaking news, fans have taken to social media and paid tribute to Mara.

One penned: “God speed for Mary and her family! Sending prayers of love and healing to the family, friends and fans.”

Another added: “Worked with Mary on a movie. She was super supportive of everyone on set and very good to me. This is very sad.”

“I had the absolute pleasure of working with Mary Mara for 2 great years. A consummate pro, funny, sharp, kind, a first-class human being. She was kind enough to participate in a table read of one of my earliest scripts. RIP Mary. You’ll be missed,” a third penned.

Mara’s final onscreen appearance was in the 2020 film Break Even. Following this, she retired and moved to Syracuse after residing in New York and Southern California.
