Matt Hancock ‘woke up his kids’ to tell them he was leaving the night before his affair was exposed, it has been revealed.

The disgraced politician has three children with his wife of 15 years, Matha, with the youngest being born in 2013.

According to The Sun, the former Health Secretary is serious about his relationship with Gina Coladangelo, who is also married with kids of her own, and the pair want to give things a go.

A source told the publication: “It’s a love match. They’re setting up home.”

Hancock broke his silence on the story on Friday afternoon with a statement.

It read: “We have worked so hard as a country to fight the pandemic. The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.

“I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need be with my children at this time.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly ‘accepted’ his apology and issued his own statement through a spokesperson.

However, the following evening, Hancock announced he was resigning.

Speaking in a video shared on Twitter, he said: “The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.

“I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need be with my children at this time.”

Coladangelo has also now stepped down from her role.
