Meghan Markle’s Nelson Mandela comparison has been slammed on social media.
In an interview with The Cut, the Duchess of Sussex recalled the 2019 Lion King premiere and how an unnamed South African cast member pulled her aside.
She said: “He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, ‘I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison’.”

Markle’s interviewer, Allison P Davies, remarked: “Of course, she knows she’s no Mandela, but perhaps even telling me this story is a mode of defence, because if you are a symbol for all that is good and charitable, how can anybody find you objectionable, how can anybody hate you?”
Discussing her cultural impact, Davies added: “Meghan’s response to being typecast seems to be to lean into all the positive things her story symbolises.

“She understands what her ascent meant to Black Britons, for whom she’s a sign of progress, and to women, for whom she’s a working mom and a signal boost to the issues that affect them (paid parental leave, equal pay).”
People are now taking to social media and slamming the comparison.
One tweeted: “Why would South Africans celebrate the same way they did when Nelson Mandela was released from prison when Meghan Markle married into the Royal Family? Last I heard, South Africa was a republic.”

Another added: “If Meghan Markle comparing herself to Nelson Mandela isn’t a sign of narcissism then I don’t know what is.”
