The idea of Meghan Markle being President of the United States of America has been ‘laughed at’ by a senior politician.

The Duchess of Sussex has been campaigning for paid parental leave in America, with the ambition of pursuing a career in politics.

However, Nancy Pelosi, a US Speaker of the House of Representatives, reportedly ‘laughed at’ Markle’s idea.

Markle allegedly wrote a 1010-word letter to Pelosi explaining why paid parental leave should be allowed in America since it is the only ‘rich’ nation where it is not mandatory.

In it, the Duchess expressed: “If we’re going to create a new era of family first policies, let’s make sure that includes a strong paid leave program for every American that’s guaranteed, accessible, and encouraged without stigma or penalty.

“I know how politically charged things can, and have, become. But this isn’t about Right or Left, it’s about right or wrong. This is about putting families above politics.”

This is not the first time her political ambitions have been discussed in the public eye, as in 2021 she reportedly cold-called politicians to tell them about her paid parental leave campaign.

She allegedly got their numbers from a New York senator, which if true, is regarded as a breach of protocol.

According to sources, via The Express, Markle would address herself as the Duchess on these calls, which apparently did not go down well with the politicians.

Speaking on Ellen DeGeneres’ show last year, Markle discussed why she is so passionate about the campaign.

She said: “[The US] is the only country in the world that does not have a paid federal family leave programme.

“I will do everything I can to make sure we can implement that for people.”
