A model with the ‘Most Handsome Face of 2021’ has been jailed for three years, according to reports.

Paing Takhon, who is also an actor, was reportedly handed the sentence for his ‘part in a mass demonstration against a military coup,’ which took place in Myanmar in February last year.

His legal representative, Khin Maung Myint, has told local media that he had been ‘sentenced to hard labour’.

In a statement that was shared online, he said: “We strongly condemn [the] military coup.

“We demand [the] immediate release of state counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, civilian government ministers and elected members of parliament.

“We demand to respect 2020 election results and form [a] new civilian government soon by NLD lead parliament.”

A friend of Takhon’s, who did not want to be named, reportedly told the BBC that the star was suffering from depression at the time of his arrest and couldn’t even ‘stand properly’.

They added that he was ‘not scared at all’ of the consequences for his part in the demonstration.

Fans have since taken to Twitter and shown their support, with one saying: “Deeply saddened to hear of Paing Takhon’s imprisonment. He has relentlessly and courageously protested against the military coup in Myanmar since the beginning.

“I am in awe of his bravery and integrity. Stay strong, Paing Takhon. We are with you.”

Another added: “Wow! So proud of Paing Takhon. I hope for his freedom very soon.”

Before his arrest, Takhon was handed the ‘Home of the 100 Most Beautiful and Handsome Faces’ award by TC Candler.

He fought off competition such as Chris Hemsworth, who came second place in the contest, and South Korean singer-songwriter, Kim Tae-Hyung, who placed third.
