Marvel Studios has announced that Ms. Marvel will be its ‘first Muslim superhero’.
Iman Vellani, who is apparently a big Avengers fan, will star in the new Disney+ series that launches on June 8.
She will play the role of Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel), who discovers she has powers when growing up in Jersey City.

When making her Toronto red carpet debut, Vellani said that she’s ‘excited’ about the role.
The 19-year-old told reporters: “It feels a lot… just a lot of feelings.
“To be in Toronto and celebrate this with all my friends and family is super weird. But yeah, I’m excited.”
The Pakistani-born actress continued: “Film and TV literally shape how we see people in this world. And so, you know, when you’re only representing Muslims in a certain type of light, it gets very one-note.
“I’m so glad that Marvel’s providing space for a character like Kamala to exist and to just take up space and tell a very specific story about a very specific girl.”
When describing her character, Vellani said that she’s ‘believable’.

“They [producers] were like, ‘Whatever your reaction is going to be in real life is what we want… So just be yourself,'” she commented. “That specificity is really what makes a character believable and what is going to represent people… not generalising all of the brown people into one character.”
According to Vellani, Brie Larson – who played Captain Marvel – reached out and was ‘kind’.
The Ms. Marvel star told reporters: “She was just holding my hand throughout all of it.
“It was really nice to kind of have that guidance of someone who’s gone through all of this and everything that I’m experiencing right now.”
