A mum is facing an intense social media backlash for sharing a video of herself dancing on TikTok while standing next to her hospitalised baby.

It all started when Whitney Leavitt, from the US, took to the social media platform and participated in a dance challenge while discussing that her newborn son, Liam, is suffering from a respiratory syncytial virus.

In the now-deleted clip, the Utah-based mum danced along to Kendrick Lamar’s single ‘Love’. Beside her, the infant could be seen in a hospital crib, with breathing tubes attached to him.

In the caption, she wrote: “Lil Lee was taken [to the hospital] cause of low oxygen.”

Over in the clip, it continued: “He tested positive for RSV. Waiting for him to breathe better on his own.”

After watching the video, many people took to the comments and questioned how the 28-year-old could be so ‘upbeat’ while her son is ill.

Following the backlash, Leavitt took to TikTok once again and defended her actions, explaining that she was ‘just trying to be positive’.

Crying, she said: “I understand that people are upset with the video that I made.

“I just want to be clear and communicate that that was me just trying to be positive. I think it’s important to not just assume what someone is going through.

“Anyways, I took the video down because I could see where somebody could get the wrong idea. But that honestly was just me just trying to be positive in this situation.”

The mum then went on to thank those that had defended her, adding: “I do want to say thank you for people who have reached out to me and my family.

“I just really appreciate it.”
