A dad who adopted a ‘child’ that turned out to be a 22-year-old has recalled the moment she ‘stood over his bed with a knife’.
Kristine and Michael Barnett, from the US, adopted Natalia Grace in 2010 and at first, they thought they had the perfect happy family.
However, it ended up being a nightmare.

The Barnetts believed that Grace had a rare condition, but this wasn’t the case – the alleged six-year-old was in fact believed to be a 22-year-old woman.
The family soon became suspicious of Grace’s age, which led to them to begin fearing for the safety of their family and now, their story has been made into a documentary, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.
In the show’s trailer, Michael claims he and his family were ‘abused’ and that Grace – who is from Ukraine – ‘tried to poison and kill’ his wife.
Michael went on to say that he would often found knives planted around the home – which Grace (who is believed to have a form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal) could use.

During an appearance on This Morning, he claims: “Certain things would start to become missing in the home, we’d find knives under her bed.
“There was a moment when I woke up in the middle of the night and Natalia was standing over my bed with a knife in her hand, a very blank look on her face, and she’s just standing there with a knife.”
The story broke in 2019 and it left the world stunned, with Grace even appearing on Dr. Phil to tell her side of the story.
When the show’s host asked her whether it was true she had gone into Kristine and Michael’s bedroom with a knife, she denied it, commenting: “If I ever went in their room, it was to wake them up because I was either scared of a nightmare or something like that.”
She then added: “But I never went in their room, I didn’t…”
During her appearance on the talk show, Grace insisted that she loved her new family and felt at home with them.
“I actually thought I had found the right family after bouncing around from a lot of families,” she said.
“I thought I had found the right family for me.”
According to People magazine, the Barnett couple’s suspicions about Grace weren’t confirmed until two years after they adopted her, in 2012.
They reportedly went to the probate court in Marion County to change her birthdate from 2003 to 1989, recognising her actual age.
In 2013, the Barnetts – along with their three sons – ended up moving to Canada. They reportedly left Grace behind in an apartment of her own.

Later on, Kristine and Michael ended up divorcing and then charges of neglect of a dependant were brought against them.
The Associated Press reports that Michael was found not guilty of three counts of neglect and conspiracy to commit neglect of a dependent in 2022.
Charges against Kristina were also dropped, reports WTHR.
To this day, Grace’s age is in dispute.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace will begin airing on ID on Monday 29.
