Natalie Portman was told to ‘get as ripped as possible’ for her role in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder

The actress has opened up to Variety about the ‘amazing challenge’ she was set when getting prepared for her role.

She told the publication: “On Black Swan, I was asked to get as small as possible.

“Here, I was asked to get as big as possible. That’s an amazing challenge – and also state of mind as a woman.”

The 41-year-old, who is known to typically have a petite frame, went on to add: “To have this reaction and be seen as big, you realise, ‘Oh, this must be so different, to walk through the world like this’.

“When you’re small – and also, I think, because I started as a kid – a lot of times I feel young or little or, like, a pat-on-the-head kind of person. And I present myself that way, too, because of that.”

Portman last starred in the Marvel franchise back in 2013. She played the role of Jane Foster, an astrophysicist who happens to be Thor’s ex-lover.

This time, with her newfound superhero abilities, she will be known as Mighty Thor.

In a chat with Empire Magazine, the movie’s director, Taika Waititi, opened up about how it would be a ‘mind f***’ for Chris Hemsworth’s character.

“It’s been about eight years,” he said. “She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mind f*** for Thor.”

Waititi added that when bringing Portman’s character back, he decided she needed to be reinvented.

He explained: “You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment.

“You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.”

Thor: Love And Love will be available to watch in cinemas from July 8.
