A Netflix movie about a hot snowman initially debuted with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than The Godfather on its release.
It’s that time of year again when the streaming platform begins dropping its annual set of festive films, just in time to enjoy over the holidays.
One particular movie has gone down a treat with fans, with one viewer declaring: “This is going into my Christmas film rotation.”
Another adds: “Why was this actually so funny, I loved it.”
“This movie made me laugh so much. I’m so genuinely glad I watched it,” a third responds.
Somebody else enthuses: “Yes, I loved it and actually got emotional over it.”
Critics have also enjoyed the holiday movie, with GQ‘s Jack King writing: “Amid its galaxy-brained silliness is a genuinely beautiful message about the human experience, and how we never forget the people we loved. Christmas is for little else.”
Adrian Horton said in The Guardian: “It is absolutely among the top tier of the holiday feel-good movie list. It has heart, pathos, humor, and just enough of a shirtless Dustin Milligan to melt any cold hearts.”
“It offers a refreshing twist on the holiday romantic comedy genre, blending cheeky humor with emotional depth to create a genuinely heartwarming film,” Archika Khurana of The Times of India penned.
When the film debuted, it scored a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, beating The Godfather’s score of 97%. It’s now dropped down to a respectable 88%.
It’s also dominated the U.S. and U.K. Netflix charts since its release.
The Netflix original, directed by Jerry Ciccoritti and written by Russell Hainline, stars Schitt’s Creek‘s Dustin Milligan alongside iconic Mean Girls actress Lacey Chabert.
It also features Lauren Holly, Katy Mixon Greer, Joe Lo Truglio, and Craig Robinson – plus a shoutout from Lindsay Lohan in one scene!
The movie’s synopsis reads: “When a young widow’s magic scarf brings a dashing snowman to life, can he help her rediscover romance, laughter, and holiday cheer before he melts away?”
Hot Frosty has captured viewers’ attention as it is a comedy that deals with difficult topics such as grief and the struggles of losing someone you love.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Hainline revealed how he came up with the idea.
He said: “What if Frosty the Snowman came to life and, instead of a snowman, he was a super hot dude? Everyone I told would almost always reply: Yeah, that should be a movie.”
