Pilot’s Tragic Final Words Before Airplane Crashed Into Building Killing 265
The final words of the captain flying Air India flight 171 that tragically crashed, killing 265 people, have been revealed.
The Air India passenger plane carrying 242 passengers and crew departed from Ahmedabad in western Indian and was bound for London, Gatwick.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner departed at 1:38 p.m. with 169 Indian nationals onboard, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.
Video footage shows the plane taking off from the airport, appearing to fly low over a residential area.
The final transmitted data showed the plane reached 625ft before it descended and became obscured by trees and buildings, before a large explosion.
The aircraft collided with a hostel block of B.J. Medical College, which was part of the medical college’s residential facilities.
241 of the 242 passengers onboard died in the crash, and at least 28 were killed in the medical hostel.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen, is the only passenger to survive the fatal incident.
Ramesh was seated in 11A near an emergency exit, which is believed to be why he survived. Despite suffering multiple injuries, he was able to walk out of the crash.
The 40-year-old told local news Hindustan Times: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.”
He told a local Indian news station: “I don’t believe how I survived. For some time, I thought I was also going to die. But when I opened my eyes, I realized I was alive, and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape.”
One British couple, Jamie Ray and Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek, who ran a spiritual wellness company, had been visiting India for a 10-day wellness retreat.
The night before the tragic incident, the couple shared a video to followers describing their time in India as a ‘magical experience’ and ‘mind-blowing.’
Jamie said: “We really have been on quite a journey, and then just spending the last night here in this most amazing hotel, we’ve just had the most delicious Thali food.
“It was the perfect way to round up the trip.”
In a second video, the couple filmed themselves at the airport, sharing with followers: “We are at the airport, just boarding, goodbye India.”
The married couple then joked about the lengthy 10-hour flight back to London.
A detailed investigation is underway to uncover what caused the plane to crash.
The 787-8 Dreamliner was flown by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and his co-pilot Clive Kundar.
Both were highly experienced, with Sabharwal reportedly having over 22 years experience as a commercial airline pilot and over 8,000 flying hours.
According to India’s aviation regulator, almost immediately after takeoff, a mayday call was made from the cockpit.
No response was given by the aircraft after that. It remains unclear what prompted the call; however, the lone survivor reported a loud bang before the plane crashed.
The aircraft’s black-box, also known as a Flight Data Recorder (FDR), has reportedly been located, which means investigators have technical data on altitude, speed, engine performance, control inputs, etc.
Investigators have continued searching the site of one of India’s worst aviation disasters.
