Will Ferrell Reveals His ‘Embarrassing’ Real Name
Will Ferrell may be one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, but it turns out the name fans know him by isn’t his real one.
And he’s far from the only celebrity to ditch the name on his birth certificate.
Over the years, countless stars have adopted stage names that became more famous than their legal identities.
Elton John’s real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight, while Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez. Katy Perry’s birth name is Katheryn Hudson, and Jamie Foxx was actually born Eric Marlon Bishop.
Even actors have done it. Emma Stone’s real first name is Emily, while Reese Witherspoon was born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon and chose to use her middle name professionally.
Now, Ferrell has joined the growing list of celebrities opening up about the name he left behind.
Will Ferrell reveals surprising childhood embarrassment
The Anchorman star recently appeared on Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
During the conversation, Ferrell reflected on his childhood in Irvine, California, and revealed one seemingly small detail that made school surprisingly difficult for him.
The 56-year-old explained that he always found it easy to make friends by being funny.
“Being funny was an easy way to make friends,” he said.
But despite becoming one of the world‘s most successful comedians, there was one thing that regularly filled him with dread every school year.
His name.
The awkward first day of school ritual
Ferrell explained that the beginning of every school year brought the same uncomfortable experience.
When teachers called attendance, they would always use the name listed on the register.
The problem was that it wasn’t the name he actually used.
Ferrell said he spent his childhood being called Will by family and friends, so hearing a completely different name spoken aloud in class felt deeply embarrassing.
“This is a minor thing, it’s not really even trauma, but I remember feeling so embarrassed,” he admitted.
Every year, teachers would call out the unfamiliar name during roll call.
He would then have to correct them in front of the entire class.
“The teacher would be like, ‘John Ferrell?’ and it was so embarrassing to me to have to say, ‘Here, but I go by Will. I don’t go by John.'”
Why it bothered him so much
Looking back, Ferrell admits he still doesn’t fully understand why it affected him so strongly.
However, as a child, the situation felt ‘excruciating.’
He explained that it often took days before teachers remembered to call him by the name he actually used.
“For the first week of school, it took like a week before the teacher remembered, ‘That’s right, you’re Will,'” he recalled.
“And that was excruciating.”
The annual ritual became something he dreaded.
“The beginning of the school year was always like, ‘Oh my gosh, I hate this.'”
Things became even more awkward when classmates inevitably started asking questions.
After hearing him correct teachers, other children would want to know why he used a different name.
“And then I think maybe for those reasons, other kids, new kids, first day of school, like, ‘Why don’t you go by John?'”
Ferrell joked that his response was usually: “It’s a long story.”
A name his parents never actually used
What made the situation even stranger was that the name wasn’t a personal choice.
According to Ferrell, his parents gave him one first name but never actually called him by it.
Instead, they used his middle name from the very beginning.
“It wasn’t my choice,” he explained. “My parents named me John but they called me Will. I grew up as Will.”
As a result, the legal name on school paperwork felt disconnected from the person he actually was.
Even decades later, Ferrell remains baffled by how embarrassed he felt having to explain it.
“I don’t know why that was so embarrassing to me to have to explain, ‘I’m actually Will.'”
From schoolboy embarrassment to Hollywood superstar
Fortunately, the awkward roll-call moments didn’t stop Ferrell from becoming one of the biggest comedy stars in the world.
After growing up in Southern California, he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1995 and quickly became one of the show’s breakout stars.
His seven-year run produced some of the most iconic sketches in SNL history, including the legendary ‘More Cowbell.”
He later built an enormously successful movie career with films including Elf, Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Zoolander, The Other Guys, and Old School.
Across television and film, he has appeared in dozens of productions and earned multiple Emmy Awards.
Ironically, millions of fans now instantly recognize the name Will Ferrell, the very name that once required so many awkward explanations in classrooms.
So what is Will Ferrell’s real name?
After years of using his middle name professionally and personally, many fans are surprised to learn that Will Ferrell’s legal birth name is actually John William Ferrell.
The actor revealed that while his family always called him Will, every official school register listed him as John.
And although he has spent most of his life answering to Will, he admits hearing teachers call out ‘John Ferrell’ during childhood was one of the most embarrassing parts of growing up.
