Authorities have provided a cause of death update following the tragedy of NHL reporter Jessi Pierce and her three young children, who were found dead inside their family home earlier this month.

Emergency crews were called to the residence in White Bear Lake during the early hours of Saturday, March 21.

As crews worked, they made a grim discovery inside the single-family home: Pierce, her children, Hudson, Cayden, and Avery, and the family’s dog had all perished before they could be rescued.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community and the wider hockey world.

Fire Chief Greg Peterson acknowledged the profound loss in a public statement, writing: “Our hearts ache for all those involved in this tragedy. We ask for the opportunity to allow our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time.”

Pierce’s husband, Mike, was reportedly out of town on a work trip at the time of the fire, adding another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating situation.

A respected voice in hockey

For more than a decade, Pierce had been a familiar and beloved figure covering the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com.

Known for her passion, energy, and deep knowledge of the game, she built a respected career in sports journalism while also raising her family.

A graduate of Iowa State University, Pierce’s work extended beyond NHL.com. Her reporting and analysis were featured in multiple outlets, including The Athletic, USA Hockey, and the Minnesota Hockey Journal.

She also covered the Minnesota Frost and co-hosted the popular Bardown Beauties podcast, further cementing her place in the hockey community.

Colleagues remember her not just for her professional accomplishments, but for her warmth and personality.

Bill Price, vice-president and editor-in-chief of NHL.com, said in a statement: “The entire NHL.com team is devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Jessi and her children.

“Jessi’s love of her family and hockey was evident in the energy and passion she brought to her work for us. She was an absolute joy to talk to and work with. She will be deeply missed.”

Her ability to connect with players, fans, and fellow journalists made her a standout presence in locker rooms and press boxes across Minnesota and beyond.

Tributes pour in from across the hockey world

In the days following the tragedy, tributes flooded in from across the sports world, painting a picture of a woman who left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

The Minnesota Wild organization released a statement honoring Pierce and her children, saying: “The Minnesota Wild organization is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Jessi Pierce and her children.

“Jessi was a kind, compassionate person who cared deeply about her family and those around her. She served as a dedicated ambassador for the game of hockey during her time covering the Wild and the NHL.”

Veteran hockey writer Michael Russo shared an emotional tribute on social media, recalling Pierce’s vibrant spirit and infectious positivity.

“Jessi Pierce (Hinrichs) was the most vibrant person — the life of the party, always with a smile on her face, always bringing a passion to every article and podcast and interview she did,” he wrote.

“Jessi simply loved covering the Wild and hockey throughout Minnesota and had a way of brightening everyone’s day with her upbeat, bubbly personality. I have literally NEVER met anybody that had a way of being EVERYBODY’s friend.”

Russo also reflected on the collective grief felt within the hockey community, adding: “Life can be unbearably unfair sometimes, and it’s impossible to make sense of this tragedy… The press box and press room won’t be the same without her.”

Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin echoed those sentiments, describing Pierce as a “ray of sunshine” and emphasizing the unity of the hockey world in mourning her loss.

“Words just can’t express how devastated we all are,” Guerin said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in the media, if you’re a player, if you’re in management, a coach, we are all in the sports world and the hockey world, and we’re all in this together.”

The community grieves

Beyond the hockey world, the tragedy has deeply affected the local community in White Bear Lake, where residents have been grappling with the sudden and devastating loss of an entire family.

In response, a special memorial event was organized to help people process their grief. A concert held on March 23 featured singer and producer Jennifer Grimm and was designed not as a traditional performance, but as a space for reflection and healing.

According to the event’s description, the evening aimed ‘to create space for grief, reflection, and healing through music,’ encouraging attendees to come together in a supportive environment.

Grimm emphasized the importance of shared mourning, saying: “This evening is about allowing people to feel what they’re carrying. There’s no expectation, no performance required from the audience, just space, music, and the quiet understanding that no one is alone in their grief.”

The gathering underscored how deeply Pierce and her children were cherished—not just as public figures, but as members of a close-knit community now united in sorrow.

The cause of death update

In the days since the fire, authorities have been working to determine what led to the deadly blaze.

Officials confirmed early on that multiple agencies, including the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, were dedicating significant resources to the investigation, Fox News reports.

Preliminary findings have ruled out intentional wrongdoing. “We are in the very early stages of the investigation, and our preliminary findings have not led to any evidence that the fire was set intentionally,” officials said in a statement.

While the exact origin of the fire remains under investigation, authorities have now clarified the cause of death for Pierce and her children. According to officials, they died as a result of the residential fire and its effects, with no indication of foul play.
