Authorities Issue Major Update On JonBenét Ramsey Investigation
Police investigating the murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey have issued a major update nearly three decades after her death.
JonBenét was killed in one of the most infamous unsolved crimes in American history, a case that has fueled speculation, documentaries, and public debate since the late 1990s.
Despite years of scrutiny and thousands of tips, no one has ever been charged with her murder.
Now, police say they have made a breakthrough in the investigation.
Crime that shocked the world
The murder dates back to the morning of December 26, 1996.
JonBenét’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, woke up in their Boulder, Colorado home to find their daughter missing.
A handwritten ransom note had been left on the stairs, claiming JonBenét had been kidnapped and demanding money from the family.

However, hours later, John discovered his daughter’s body in the basement of the house.
An autopsy later revealed JonBenét had been s**ually assaulted and strangled. She also suffered a fractured skull.
Investigators found unknown DNA under her fingernails and in her underwear, evidence that has remained central to the case ever since.
Family cleared and questions remain
Over the years, suspicion fell heavily on the Ramsey family.
However, in 2008, John and Patsy Ramsey and their son were formally cleared as suspects.
Patsy died in 2006 after battling cancer.
Despite the clearance, the case continued to draw attention, with countless theories emerging around what happened inside the Ramsey home that night.

An investigation spanning decades
Boulder Police say detectives have followed up on every lead submitted since the murder. That includes more than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails.
Officers have traveled to 19 states and interviewed or spoken to more than 1,000 individuals in connection with the case.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said the tragedy has never left the department.
“The killing of JonBenét was an unspeakable crime and this tragedy has never left our hearts,” he said.
“We are committed to following up on every lead and we are continuing to work with DNA experts and our law enforcement partners around the country until this tragic case is solved.
“This investigation will always be a priority for the Boulder Police Department.”
Collaboration with federal and state agencies
Police say the case has remained under constant review with federal, state and local partners, as well as DNA experts from across the country.
Agencies involved have included the FBI, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, Colorado’s Department of Public Safety, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and multiple outside forensic laboratories.
That collaboration, police say, is ongoing.
District Attorney Michael Dougherty has said evidence will be key to solving the case.

“The murder of JonBenét Ramsey is a terrible tragedy and sparked years of unanswered questions and theories,” he said.
“Our office has successfully prosecuted other cold case homicides and many murder cases. In every one of those cases, it was the evidence that proved the defendant(s) guilty.
“Whether it is DNA or other evidence, more is needed to solve this murder. I appreciate the collaboration with CBI, the FBI, and the Boulder Police Department.”
New leadership brings renewed hope
JonBenét’s father has said recent changes within the Boulder Police Department have given him renewed optimism.
Speaking to Banfield, John said the addition of new leadership had transformed the way the case was being handled.
“It’s encouraging,” he said.

“The key really in progress has been the addition of new leadership there. It was not very good for 25 to 26 years.
“And now, knowing Chief (Stephen) Redfern from the outside, I’ve met with him three or four times. I’m impressed with him. I think he’s sincere and honest.
“The problem with the old leadership was the old guard. These people that were in that police department had never investigated a murder.”
New evidence and advances in DNA technology
Boulder Police revealed last week that detectives have uncovered new evidence and conducted several new interviews over the past year based on incoming tips.
Officers have also re-interviewed individuals connected to the case and retested pieces of evidence using evolving DNA technology.
John Ramsey has publicly advocated for Boulder Police to work with Othram Labs, a cutting-edge forensic laboratory specializing in investigative genetic genealogy.
Othram has gained prominence for its role in solving high-profile cold cases, including assisting in the Bryan Kohberger murders.
“I think if they do, we’ve got probably a 70, 80% chance of getting an answer,” John said.
“It’s been very successful in solving the old cold cases. It’s kind of the latest and greatest use of technology and DNA to solve crimes.”
