A 23-year-old British TikTok influencer is facing the possibility of death by firing squad in Dubai.

Brooke George, from Gravesend, Kent, was arrested after the fatal stabbing of 26-year-old William Treeby in the United Arab Emirates.

However, George claims she acted in self-defense after allegedly suffering a violent assault and fearing for her life.

The case has drawn international attention, with campaign group Detained in Dubai urging authorities to investigate it as a domestic violence case rather than solely as a murder prosecution.

If convicted of premeditated murder under UAE law, George could face execution.

Family says relationship turned abusive

According to advocacy organization Detained in Dubai, per the BBC, George first met Treeby online before traveling to Dubai, where the pair began a relationship.

Her first visit to the city was a positive experience, but those close to her claim everything changed during a second trip.

The organization says George alleged that Treeby became increasingly controlling and abusive, eventually withholding her passport and preventing her from leaving the country.

Her mother, Thereza George, said she noticed a dramatic change in her daughter’s behavior shortly before the fatal incident, the Standard reports..

“After Brooke returned to Dubai for the second time, the dynamic between them had clearly changed.

“The day before the incident, she did not seem like herself. She was quieter and not her usual happy, cheerful self, but she did not tell me why.

“That evening they went to a bar in Dubai. When I spoke to Brooke right after the incident, she was absolutely terrified. I have never seen my daughter so frightened in my life. She was crying uncontrollably. I could see that one of her eyes was badly swollen and was beginning to close.”

Thereza said she remains deeply worried about her daughter’s wellbeing.

“The daughter I spoke to that night was utterly terrified,” she added. “I firmly believe she was desperately trying to get home and away from whatever had happened to her.”

According to Detained in Dubai, George had already booked a flight back to the UK before returning to the apartment to retrieve her passport.

The organization says she alleges Treeby assaulted her again, prompting her to reach for a kitchen knife.

Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai, said George maintains she “feared for her life and, reaching for a kitchen knife within her grasp, acted in self-defence.”

Allegations over her treatment in custody

George was arrested in the early hours of June 22 and has since been charged with premeditated murder.

Detained in Dubai has raised concerns about how she has been treated while in custody.

The advocacy group alleges George was forced to remove her clothing in front of male police officers without a female officer being present, describing the experience as ‘deeply humiliating and distressing.’

The organization has also claimed she was required to make statements without legal representation and was not initially given access to British consular officials.

Radha Stirling said the case raises wider concerns about how allegations of domestic violence are handled in the UAE.

“The case raises serious concerns about violence against women, the right to self-defence, due process and the treatment of British nationals detained overseas,” she said.

Detained in Dubai is calling for George to be released on bail while the investigation continues.

The group has also urged authorities to provide her with legal representation, medical care, protection, and immediate British consular assistance.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed officials are assisting, per ITV.

“We are in touch with a British woman detained in the UAE, we are supporting her family, and we are in contact with the local authorities.”

Questions surrounding the investigation

Beyond the fatal confrontation itself, Detained in Dubai says there are broader issues investigators should examine.

According to Stirling, friends and family became increasingly worried that George may have been lured to Dubai under false pretenses.

She pointed to what she described as an unexplained shift in Treeby’s behavior after George arrived, along with allegations that her passport had been withheld and that she had told friends ‘things weren’t right.’

The organization also referenced a one-way airline ticket and a professional bikini photoshoot arranged during George’s first visit as factors that caused concern among those close to her.

Stirling said investigators should consider whether George was herself the victim of violence and possible exploitation.

“We are calling for Brooke to be released on bail pending the outcome of the investigation,” she said.

“The UAE has a well-documented history of criminalising and revictimising women who report violence.”

Authorities in Dubai have not publicly responded to those allegations, and the criminal proceedings remain ongoing.

Why Brooke George could face a firing squad

Under United Arab Emirates law, a conviction for premeditated murder can carry the death penalty.

Detained in Dubai says George is therefore at risk of execution by firing squad if she is convicted.

The 23-year-old former John Lewis employee, who has built an audience of around 100,000 followers on TikTok, denies intentionally murdering Treeby and maintains she acted in self-defense after a violent assault.

Even if prosecutors do not seek or obtain the death penalty, she could still face life imprisonment if convicted.

As the investigation continues, campaigners are urging UAE authorities to fully examine George’s self-defense claim alongside the allegations of domestic abuse, while British officials say they remain in contact with local authorities and are continuing to support her family.
