A dad who would later be convicted of killing and beheading his own son gave a chilling television interview after the boy’s disappearance.

Mark Redwine collected his 13-year-old son, Dylan, from Durango-La Plata County Airport in Colorado in November 2012 for a court-ordered Thanksgiving visit.

Dylan’s mother, Elaine Hall, who was in the middle of a divorce and custody dispute with Mark, reported the boy missing the following day.

It would take more than seven months before authorities discovered partial remains of Dylan’s body near his father’s home.

November 18, 2012, marked the final confirmed sighting of Dylan.

Security footage from the airport showed minimal interaction between father and son.

That same lack of warmth continued when the pair visited a nearby Walmart shortly after.

Dylan’s older brother, Cory, later said the teenager had wanted to stay over at a friend’s house that night but his father refused and took him back to his home instead.

While there, Dylan reportedly texted his friend to say he would come over at around 6.30 a.m. the next morning. It was one of the last known contacts he ever had with anyone.

By about 6.46 a.m., when Dylan failed to arrive, his friend became concerned and messaged him to ask where he was.

Mark claimed he had left his house that morning to run errands, then returned to find Dylan gone.

Elaine Hall never believed her ex-husband’s account and immediately feared the worst.

Her suspicions would eventually be confirmed when Mark was convicted of Dylan’s murder.

Dylan’s disappearance triggered a massive search effort in the rugged mountain terrain north of Mark’s home in southwest Colorado.

Volunteers and law enforcement carried out repeated searches over the following months.

As the hunt continued, Mark appeared in a KUSA television interview, where he said: “We were inseparable,” adding: “I would do anything for that boy.”

He spoke about Dylan’s love of baseball and pizza and appeared emotional while recalling their time together.

When asked whether he felt responsible for Dylan going missing, Mark replied: “I do blame myself. I relived this a thousand times.

“Every time it comes back to ‘I saw him on the couch, and I didn’t try hard enough to wake him up and have him come with me, knowing he had talked about going to spend time with his friends.’ I beat myself up over that constantly.”

Behind the scenes, investigators were closing in.

Search warrants were executed at Mark’s home, where forensic testing revealed traces of Dylan’s blood in the living room.

A cadaver dog also alerted to the recent presence of human remains in the living room and in the bed of Mark’s pickup truck.

In June 2013, the first partial remains of Dylan’s body were discovered about eight miles up Middle Mountain Road, a few miles northeast of Mark’s property.

More than two years later, in November 2015, hikers found Dylan’s skull roughly 1.5 miles farther up the same road.

Forensic experts testified that the skull bore what appeared to be knife markings.

Wildlife specialists also told the court that no animal native to the area would have transported the skull such a distance from the rest of the remains.

Case that captured worldwide attention

As the investigation dragged on, the case drew national and international coverage.

Elaine, Cory and Mark all appeared on a two-part episode of Dr. Phil, which ended with Mark refusing to undergo a lie detector test.

With much of the case relying on circumstantial evidence, prosecutors turned to a grand jury to determine whether there was enough to indict.

In July 2017, a La Plata County grand jury approved the indictment.

Mark, who was working as a truck driver at the time, was arrested two days later in Bellingham, Washington.

Trial reveals son discovered Mark Redwine’s dark secret

During the trial, prosecutors said the relationship between father and son had soured after Dylan allegedly discovered disturbing s**ual images of his father.

The photos reportedly showed Mark cross-dressing, wearing a diaper and handling human waste.

Cory Redwine told People in 2017 that he believed the graphic images may have been the motive for the killing and said Dylan had planned to confront their father.

The brothers had allegedly found the photos on Mark’s laptop during a bonding trip they took together with him.

Authorities believe that when Dylan challenged his father over the images, Mark killed him in the living room, decapitated him and later discarded the remains in the wilderness to be eaten by animals.

Medical experts testified that Dylan likely died from a skull fracture and sharp force injuries.

In October 2021, Mark Redwine was sentenced to 48 years in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

Even after the verdict, he continued to deny responsibility, calling the outcome ‘fake justice,’ according to KUSA.

Before imposing the sentence, Judge Jeffrey Wilson told him: “After all this time and listening to what was heard in this courtroom, you still take absolutely no responsibility for what you did to Dylan.

“I have trouble remembering a convicted criminal defendant that has shown such an utter lack of remorse for his criminal behavior.”
