A haunting text message sent from Dominic Russo to his girlfriend Mackenzie Shirilla a month before she killed him, has been revealed.

The case that horrified the nation has returned to the public eye after a series of newly released records exposed unsettling details about the relationship at the heart of one of America’s most infamous fatal crash cases.

MacKenzie Shirilla, from Ohio, was found guilty of killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan, during a catastrophic crash at speeds of more than 100mph in July 2022.

Details of the horrific case have reemerged in recent months, following the release of the Netflix documentary detailing the fatal incident; The Crash.

The film has reignited discussion about the July 2022 collision that claimed the lives of Russo, 20, and Flanagan, 19, while leaving Shirilla with serious injuries.

Now 22, Shirilla is serving two concurrent prison terms of 15 years to life after being convicted on multiple murder counts related to the deadly incident.

Although Shirilla has repeatedly said she has no memory of the moments leading up to the crash, prosecutors maintained throughout the trial that the collision was deliberate and marked the devastating end of a volatile and troubled relationship.

Freshly released documents, text exchanges, jailhouse phone calls, and police records are now offering new insight into the months preceding the fatal crash.

The crash that horrified America

The deadly crash took place in the early hours of July 31, 2022, after Shirilla, Russo and Flanagan had attended a graduation party.

The three friends were traveling through Strongsville, Ohio, with Shirilla at the wheel of her Toyota Camry, when she accelerated down a residential road and smashed head on into a brick building.

Investigations revealed the car had been traveling at around 100mph prior to the smash, with data showing the accelerator was fully depressed in the moments leading up to the crash and the breaks were never applied.

Prosecutors used this evidence to suggest Shirilla had intentionally caused the crash.

After emergency services attended the wreckage, both Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene and Shirilla was found with serious injuries, which led to multiple surgeries.

The case centered around Shirilla and Russo’s toxic relationship

Much of the legal case against Shirilla centered around her toxic relationship with Russo. The pair started dating as teenagers and were together for several years, with their relationship often seeming perfect on social media.

However, messages which have since been made public have revealed a very different reality.

Court testimony painted a picture of a relationship marked by frequent disputes, separations, allegations of infidelity, and emotional instability.

Those closest to the couple described their relationship as increasingly strained and dysfunctional in the months before the fatal crash.

According to prosecutors, the tension between Shirilla and Russo had escalated significantly in the days leading up to the incident.

During the trial, witnesses testified that Shirilla had allegedly threatened to drive her car into a crash during previous arguments with Russo.

Shirilla’s family has challenged parts of that testimony and continues to argue that her conviction was unjust.

According to records obtained from investigators, some messages contained emotional outbursts, threats, accusations and references to self-harm.

In one exchange from January 2020, Shirilla allegedly told Russo she was ‘gonna kill someone’ after becoming angry during an argument.

Other messages reportedly included statements such as: “I’m gonna kill someone.” “THIS IS WHY I J WANNA F—ING KMS.” “I just want to bang my head on the wall till I’m dead.” “Treat the girl who would die for you a little better.”

Investigators also uncovered messages in which Russo allegedly accused Shirilla of threatening him during previous disputes.

In one argument, Russo claimed she threatened to stab him in the eye.

In another exchange, he accused her of hitting him, pulling his hair, and throwing a rock toward him during a confrontation.

Additional messages showed both accusing each other of manipulation, blackmail, reckless driving, and emotional abuse.

At one point, Russo allegedly warned that Shirilla was ‘driving like a maniac.’

Just a month before the deadly crash that Russo and his best friend, Davion Flanagan, the former sent a chilling text message to his then-girlfriend, in an exchange which has since been obtained by TMZ.

In the message, the 20-year-old could be seen telling his partner that they needed some time apart, because ‘there isn’t very much time on earth.’

“Kenzie u know i love u but i don’t think we should be together at this point there isn’t very much time on earth yaknow,” he wrote in the message on June 2, 2022.

“I dont want u to think im abandoning u i wish it could work but i don’t think its going to at this point especially with the threats.

“We should just breakup so we can both find happiness somewhere else.”

Prosecutors say Russo’s desire to end the relationship fueled Shirilla’s actions, which ultimately led to his death.
