Donald Trump’s ‘Doomsday Plane’ Explained As It Makes ‘Highly Unusual’ Flight
A highly unusual flight by the U.S. Air Force’s ‘doomsday plane’ has captured global attention amid mounting geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The aircraft in question, a Boeing E-4B known as ‘Nightwatch,’ is no ordinary jet.
It’s built to serve as a mobile command center in the event of a nuclear or national crisis.
On Tuesday, June 17, the aircraft departed from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana at 5:56 p.m. ET and landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland at 10:01 p.m., completing a mysterious four-hour flight.
While the U.S. Air Force has not commented on the nature of the mission, its timing, coinciding with escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, has sparked speculation.

The E-4B, commonly dubbed the ‘doomsday plane,’ is designed to ensure government continuity during catastrophic events.
Capable of staying airborne for days thanks to mid-air refueling, it can shield against ballistic missile attacks and electromagnetic pulses.
Specialized features include radiation-hardened systems, blast-resistant windows, and advanced communication tools that allow military and civil leaders to maintain command and control in the direst scenarios.
“In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command and control centers,” the U.S. Air Force notes, “the aircraft provides a highly survivable command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders, and coordinate actions by civil authorities.”
With only four of these planes in existence, one is always kept on standby, a protocol that has been in place since the Cold War.
While the E-4B does carry out training and routine flights, this week’s deployment stood out due to its use of an unfamiliar identifier – ‘ORDER01’ instead of the usual ‘ORDER6.’

This irregularity comes as President Donald Trump cut short his appearance at the G7 summit on June 16, citing urgent matters, per the BBC.
His press secretary later revealed that the deteriorating situation between Israel and Iran was the primary reason.
Just a day after his early departure, Trump met with national security officials and reportedly gave initial approval for potential U.S. strikes on Iran, pending further developments in nuclear negotiations.
“I like to make the final decision one second before it’s due,” Trump said regarding the unfolding strategy.
On Truth Social, Trump vented his frustration with Iran: “Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!”
