As spider season approaches, an expert has shared which colours to avoid in your home if you want to keep the eight-legged creepy crawlies away.

With fall’s imminent arrival, it’s not just time for pumpkins and cosy nights in, but also the rise in spider activity.

There are nearly 3,000 spider species in North America alone, and it’s fair to say that the frequency in which we find them lurking in our homes only increases at this time of year.

But fascinatingly, findings indicate that the paint shades we select for our walls do more than just create atmosphere; they could also draw in unwelcome spider guests.

And just in case you were wondering, Michael Rolland, managing director at The Paint Shed, has provided guidance on which colours to definitely avoid if you don’t fancy an eight-legged creature becoming a frequent visitor.

Speaking to WalesOnline, he explained: “The paint colour you select can significantly affect the number of spiders in your home.

“Spiders are sensitive to certain light wavelengths, and the colours you pick can either attract or deter them from your living space.”

So what colors should we definitely be steering clear of?

The expert advised: “Green has seen a huge surge in popularity in the home.

“However, the bad news is that it’s not only interior designers who love the shade; spiders do, too.”

He added: “Research shows that some breeds of spider are more sensitive to green wavelengths and are naturally drawn to it.

“Therefore, by opting for green walls or decor, you may be creating an environment that’s more attractive to these unwanted guests during spider season.”

In addition, darker colors like brown, also create a ‘inviting environment for spiders.’

This is because they have the ability to absorb more light, the expert warned.

Rolland said: “Opting for lighter colours helps deter spiders by reflecting more light and making the space less appealing.

“Additionally, with lighter hues, spiders are more visible, making it easier for you to spot and relocate them to a more spider-friendly area.”

So what’s your absolute best bet for a spider-free household?

The expert suggests blue.

He added: “As such, choosing blue for your home’s interior and exterior can be a strategic way to deter spiders.

“Consider painting your ceiling or walls in light blue to create a less inviting environment for these pests.”
