The gravestone originally looked completely normal
Steven Paul Owens passed away on September 2, 2021, according to his obituary.
Loved ones described him as someone who adored fishing, coaching children’s sports teams, and spending time with family.
He had previously worked at cemeteries himself before later retiring from the printing industry.
According to relatives, Steven was also known for his sharp humor and playful personality.
After his death, his children said they wanted his gravestone to reflect the person he truly was rather than create what they felt would be a generic or overly formal memorial.
The headstone was eventually installed at Warren-Powers Cemetery in Polk County, Iowa.
At first glance, the memorial appears fairly traditional.
The front features Steven’s full name, his birth and death dates, and the phrase: “If you don’t listen, you’ll have to feel.”
Meanwhile, the back of the gravestone contains what initially looks like an ordinary tribute from family members.
The inscription reads:
“Forever in our hearts.
Until we meet again.
Cherished memories.
Known as our son, brother.
Father, papa, uncle.
Friend and cousin.”
Most visitors initially saw nothing unusual about the wording.
But once people looked closer, everything changed.
People were stunned after spotting the hidden detail
The controversy exploded after social media users realized the first letter of each line spelled out a secret message.
Once people noticed the acrostic hidden within the tribute, reactions poured in online almost immediately.
Some people praised the family for creating something unique and personal.
“Honestly, this is exactly how I’d want my family to remember me,” one person wrote online.
Another joked: “I’m sorry but that’s incredible.”
Others, however, were horrified.
Critics argued profanity had no place in a cemetery regardless of whether the wording was partially hidden.
“It needs to be removed,” one commenter wrote.
Another added: “People are visiting loved ones there. A cemetery isn’t the place for this.”
The debate quickly spread nationwide after local outlets began covering the gravestone.
Cemetery officials strongly opposed the memorial
Not everyone involved approved of the gravestone before it was installed.
According to reports, cemetery trustees objected to the hidden profanity and warned the family they did not believe the memorial belonged there.

“We do not want it there. It really needs to be removed.”

Trustees also raised concerns about nearby grieving families potentially discovering the wording while visiting loved ones.
The township later confirmed lawyers were consulted while officials considered whether legal action could potentially force the gravestone’s removal.
The debate still hasn’t gone away
Although the controversy first erupted in 2022, the story continues resurfacing online years later whenever new people discover photos of the memorial.
Some continue defending the family’s decision, arguing funerals and gravestones should reflect the actual personality of the person being remembered rather than follow rigid expectations.
Others insist cemeteries should remain solemn public spaces free from hidden profanity or controversial messages.
The debate has also sparked wider discussions about unusual gravestones in general, with more families choosing personalized epitaphs, jokes, and hidden meanings instead of traditional memorial wording.
Family responds to backlash over hidden gravestone message
For Steven’s children, the backlash has been painful from the beginning.
They insist the hidden message was never intended to offend strangers and instead reflected their father’s sense of humor perfectly.
Speaking previously to local media, daughter Lindsay Owens explained the phrase was actually something Steven often said jokingly to friends and relatives.
“It was definitely his term of endearment,” she explained.
“If he didn’t like you, he didn’t speak to you. That was just who he was.”
His son Zachary Owens shared a similar explanation, describing their father as someone who loved pretending to get annoyed in a playful way.
“He was easily fired up, but it was kind of a joke,” Zachary said.
Lindsay also revealed family members would sometimes deliberately tease Steven just to get him to respond with the phrase.
“If you got him to say it, it meant he liked you,” she explained.
According to the family, the idea of hiding the message inside the inscription reportedly came from one of Steven’s cousins.
Zachary later admitted that everyone immediately supported the idea because it felt authentic to their father’s personality.
“Our intention was never to offend anyone,” Lindsay said.
“I would just ask people to let us remember our father the way we remember him,” Zachary added.
And the hidden message that sparked years of outrage was the phrase secretly spelled out by the first letter of each line: “F*** OFF.”
