Horror Fans Already Saying ‘Traumatizing’ New Movie Is The Scariest Film Of 2026
Horror fans are saying a ‘traumatizing’ new movie is the scariest film of 2026.
Horror has been having a major moment over the last few years, but audiences are now becoming obsessed with a particularly unsettling trend: romance stories twisted into psychological nightmares.
From toxic relationships and supernatural love stories to obsession-fueled thrillers dripping in blood and dread, modern horror filmmakers have found terrifying new ways to turn intimacy into something viewers genuinely fear.
And if recent audience reactions are anything to go by, one new release may have just pushed that concept further than ever before.
Moviegoers are already calling the film ‘disturbing,’ ‘deeply uncomfortable,’ and even ‘traumatizing,’ with some horror fans claiming it’s easily the scariest movie released so far in 2026.
The low-budget supernatural thriller has exploded online following its theatrical debut, quickly earning comparisons to genre-defining hits like Barbarian, Fatal Attraction, and Smile.
But many viewers insist the film’s unique blend of romance, body horror, psychological manipulation, and emotional terror makes it feel unlike anything else currently in theaters.
One viewer wrote online: “I haven’t stopped thinking about this movie for two days.”
Another called it “the kind of horror movie that genuinely gets under your skin.”
Others praised its ability to create fear from emotional instability rather than relying purely on jump scares or monsters.
“Horror movies rarely freak me out anymore,” one fan posted. “But this one made me physically uncomfortable in the best possible way.”
Another viewer simply described it as: “Traumatizing.”
Much of the attention has focused on the film’s lead performance, with audiences particularly shaken by the behavior of its central female character.
Fans have flooded social media with clips, reaction videos, and memes centered around the character’s eerie facial expressions, unpredictable emotional swings, and increasingly violent obsession.
One viral post read: “This movie just created a new horror icon,” while others joked that the movie would ‘destroy dating forever.’
Critics are praising its disturbing atmosphere
The audience buzz hasn’t just stayed online — critics have also embraced the film, helping push it to one of the strongest horror scores of the year.
The movie currently holds a 94% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising its creepy atmosphere, dark humor, shocking violence, and emotionally intense performances.
Critic Katie Walsh described it as ‘a dark and dread-filled’ nightmare that turns a familiar romance setup into something deeply disturbing in her LA Times review.
Writing for the Los Angeles Times, Walsh noted that audiences at the premiere were visibly reacting to even small movements and expressions from the film’s lead actress.
“Her hysterical grin sets your teeth on edge,” Walsh wrote, adding that the performance would “surely traumatize Gen Z for years.”
Other critics were equally enthusiastic.
Peter Travers described the film as: “A next-gen Fatal Attraction that turns dating into a bloody horror show.”
Polygon called it ‘an assured and freaky debut feature,’ while reviewer Mike McGranaghan declared: “Every few years, a horror movie comes along that’s so original and so fresh in its voice that it can’t be ignored.”
Even reviewers who had issues with certain plot elements still praised the performances and filmmaking style.
The film also appears to be connecting strongly with general audiences. According to reports, moviegoers gave it an impressive CinemaScore grade of A-, which is relatively rare for horror films.
Financially, the movie has already become a surprise hit too. Despite reportedly being made for under $1 million, it has already grossed more than $23 million worldwide after only days in theaters.

The story turns romance into a nightmare
At first glance, the premise sounds deceptively simple.
The story follows Baron ‘Bear’ Bailey, a shy music store employee hopelessly in love with his childhood friend and coworker Nikki. Desperate to finally win her affection, he purchases a mysterious novelty item called a ‘One Wish Willow,’ which supposedly grants wishes when broken.
After a humiliating interaction with Nikki, Bear uses the object to wish that she would love him ‘more than anyone in the world.’ At first, it appears to work perfectly.
Nikki suddenly becomes affectionate, passionate, and intensely devoted to him. But things quickly spiral into something terrifying as her love mutates into violent obsession, emotional instability, possessiveness, and horrifying acts of self-destruction.
As Bear realizes the wish has essentially trapped them both inside a nightmare, he desperately tries to reverse what he’s done. Unfortunately, the supernatural object comes with horrifying rules — the wish can only end if either Bear or Nikki dies.
What follows is an increasingly chaotic descent into paranoia, body horror, manipulation, and graphic violence.
The film mixes supernatural horror with toxic relationship dynamics in a way many critics say feels particularly effective for younger audiences navigating modern dating culture.
Several reviewers also noted the film cleverly flips traditional horror tropes by making emotional neediness and unhealthy attachment the primary source of terror.
Behind-the-scenes details make it even wilder
Part of what makes the movie’s success so surprising is how small and unconventional the production actually was.
Writer-director Curry Barker reportedly came from a YouTube filmmaking background before landing the project after his horror short films gained millions of views online.
The entire movie was shot in roughly 20 to 26 days on a microbudget estimated between $750,000 and $1 million.
Barker also wrote, directed, and edited the film himself.
One particularly bizarre piece of trivia involves the production’s reshoots. According to interviews, the crew originally planned to revisit the party sequence for additional scenes, but they were unable to after the filming location was destroyed in the Los Angeles fires.
The film’s supernatural object, the ‘One Wish Willow,’ was also designed with help from Barker’s mother, who works as a graphic designer, per TIFF.
Another major talking point has been the ending.
Barker originally filmed a much darker finale inspired by Romeo and Juliet, but changed it after advice from his father and others involved in the production.
Lead actress Inde Navarrette has become one of the breakout stars of the horror genre almost overnight, thanks to her performance as Nikki, with many fans already labeling her the newest ‘scream queen.’
The movie premiered during the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival before sparking a massive bidding war among distributors. Focus Features eventually acquired the film in a deal reportedly worth more than $14 million — one of the biggest genre acquisitions in TIFF history.
And the film horror fans can’t stop talking about? It’s called Obsession.
